DURHAM, N.C. ? For the second straight week, one of the members of the second-ranked Duke women's basketball team has been tabbed ACC Player of the Week as junior Lindsey Harding earned the honor for the first time in her career after leading the Blue Devils to a pair of road victories last week.
Harding, a product of Houston, Texas, averaged 15.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.5 steals per game in leading Duke to wins over Georgia Tech and 22nd-ranked Boston College. Against the Yellow Jackets on Wednesday, Harding scored 12 points and pulled down five rebounds in the Blue Devils' 67-59 win. She also added three assists and three steals in 33 minutes of action.
Against the Eagles on Saturday, Harding scored 18 points to go with a team-high seven rebounds in Duke's 66-52 victory. The 5-8 point guard also dished off five assists and came away with four steals, and was 6-for-10 from the floor, including converting her only three-point attempt.
For the week, Harding shot 52.9 percent from the field (9-for-17), and was 3-for-5 (60 percent) from beyond the three-point arc as Duke remained unbeaten, moving to 16-0 overall and 5-0 in the ACC.
Since ACC action has started, Harding has stepped up her play averaging 15.0 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 2.2 steals, while hitting 56.3 percent from the field and 50.0 percent from downtown. She returned this season after missing all of last year and is establishing herself as the best all-around point guard in the nation. On the season, she is averaging 11.5 points, 4.1 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 1.9 steals in only 25.8 minutes over the first 16 contests.
Prior to 2005-06, Harding had hit only 8-of-42 three-pointers in her career at Duke, but she worked very hard on her shot last year and over the summer. In the first 16 games, she has hit 17-of-26 from downtown and is making 56.1 percent of her field goals. Harding is also widely known as one of the best defenders in the nation.
Her 65.4 three-point field goal percentage leads the ACC, while she ranks tied for eighth in assists and second in assist/turnover ratio (2.64).
North Carolina's Rashanda McCants was named the league's Rookie of the Week. Last week, Blue Devil senior Monique Currie was selected ACC Player of the Week. Duke will conclude its four-game road trip tonight as the Blue Devils play at Holy Cross with a 7:00 p.m. tip.
