BOSTON ? A pair of sophomores led the Duke men's track and field team at the prestigious Terrier Classic, hosted by Boston University Friday, with Jade Ellis taking first in the long jump and Peter Lewellen breaking his own school record in the 500-meter run.
Ellis jumped 23-5.25 to secure his top finish in an event where he took second last year with a school record of 23-9. Lewellen ran 1:03.46 to strike down his indoor record, set at the same meet last year, of 1:03.85. Both Blue Devils qualified for the IC4A Championships with their marks.
Junior Daniel King finished just shy of the Duke record he holds in the 400m (48.63), coming in 12th in the event Friday in a time of 48.96. Sophomore Chris Spooner posted Duke's fastest 2006 time in the 3,000m in an IC4A-qualifying performance of 8:17.6 and 17th place. Spooner bested the IC4A standard by over nine seconds.
Also qualifying for the IC4A Championships was the men's distance medley relay, who ran to a fourth-place finish in 10:11.88.
In other action for the Blue Devils, several individuals competed at the UNC Fast Times, hosted by North Carolina. Willene Hare and Wendy Jaglom posted top-30 finishes in the 400m, running 1:02 (24th) and 1:02.58 (27th), respectively, and Jessica Tanner threw 42-0.5 in the weight throw to finish 15th for the women.
Sophomore Tyler Clarke led the men's competition with a runner-up performance in the heptahlon, where he totaled 2,640 points. The men's distance medley relay finished seventh in 10:27.44, and sophomore Justin Kaviar jumped 19-11.5 in the long jump for 22nd place.
The Duke women will compete at the Terrier Classic Saturday, while action will continue for both men and women at the Fast Times in Chapel Hill. Duke's pole vaulters will wrap up competition at the Pole Vault Summit Saturday. Results for the two-day competition are not yet available.
