Showdown On Tobacco Road--No. 1 Duke vs. No. 2 North Carolina On Sunday...
In a showdown of the final two undefeated teams in NCAA Division I women's basketball, Duke (20-0, 7-0 ACC) will host North Carolina (19-0, 6-0) on Sunday at 7:00 p.m., on ESPN2 in a sold out Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils are ranked No. 1 in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll and No. 2 in the Associated Press (AP) poll, while UNC is listed No. 2 in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll and No. 3 by the AP.
Calling the action for ESPN2 will be Beth Mowins (PxP), Kara Lawson (Color) and Jimmy Dykes (sideline). The contest will also be aired live on the Duke Radio Network with Steve Barnes (PxP) and Missy Anderson (Color).
The match-up will mark the second straight sellout for Duke and second consecutive No. 1 vs. No. 2 game in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils have opened the 2005-06 campaign with a 20-0 record, which ties for the best start in school history (2002-03). Duke also registered its ninth consecutive 20-win season with a 97-65 victory over Clemson on Thursday.
Noting The Blue Devils...
Duke has collected a school record tying six 100-point games and has hit the 90-point mark 10 times this season ... the Maryland at Duke contest on Feb. 13 will now be played at 7:00 p.m. instead of 7:30 p.m.
Storylines...
* Prior to the game, the USA Basketball Assistant Executive Director for Women's Programs Carol Callan will present Gail Goestenkors with her 2004 U.S. Olympic ring and a plaque for coaching the 2005 World Championship team,
while Abby Waner and Monique Currie will receive plaques for playing USA Basketball over the summer.
* In 2002-03, Duke opened the season with a 20-0 record before losing to UConn, 77-65. It was a No. 1 vs. No.
2 contest, and both teams were undefeated.
* Duke is at the end of one of the toughest stretches a Blue Devil squad has ever played in the regular season as the Blue Devils faced top-ranked Tennessee and third-ranked North Carolina in the same week, while also traveling to face Clemson.
* Duke and North Carolina are separated by only 10.7 miles going down Highway 15-501.
* The Blue Devils posted their 20th win of the season on Thursday at Clemson, marking the ninth consecutive 20-win season under Gail Goestenkors. The ACC record for most consecutive 20-win seasons is Virginia (14). Duke has the longest current streak in the ACC for 20-win seasons with the next closest being North Carolina with four.
A Look At North Carolina...
The Tar Heels enter Sunday night's game with an 19-0 overall, 6-0 league mark and are coached by Sylvia Hatchell, who is in her 31st year as a head coach. Ivory Latta (16.8 points, 48 treys), Erlana Larkins (12.1 points, 6.7 rebounds) and Camille Little (9.9 points, 5.3 rebounds) lead the Tar Heels on the season.
The Series With North Carolina...
The Blue Devils and Tar Heels will meet for the 67th time on Sunday with North Carolina leading the overall series 39-28 after winning the last three in a row. Duke has won 15 of the last 19 contests. The Blue Devils had won 12 straight contests against the Tar Heels prior to last year when UNC won all three games by an average of 11.7. Duke owns a 16-11 overall record against North Carolina in games played at Cameron Indoor Stadium, while winning seven out of the last eight.
Last Year Versus North Carolina...
Last season the Blue Devils were very successful posting a 31-5 overall record and advancing to the NCAA Elite Eight. Three of the five losses came to the hands of North Carolina by an 11.7 margin. In the losses, Duke shot 33.3 percent from the field, 31.1 percent from three-point land, averaged 62.0 points and were outrebounded by a 9.3 margin.
The Blue Devils averaged 20.0 turnovers a contest and dished out only 12.0 assists.
Against all other opponents last season, Duke averaged 77.3 points, hit 47.0 percent of its field goals, 36.2 percent from downtown, outrebounded opponents by 10.2 and averaged only 16.3 turnovers, while dishing out 18.8 assists.

For the second straight home game, the Blue Devils will feature a No. 1 vs. No. 2 contest. On Jan. 23, the top two teams in the Associated Press poll faced off with top-ranked Tennessee at second-ranked Duke.
On Sunday, the game will have the top two ranked squads in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll as the Blue Devils are No.1 and North Carolina is No. 2.
