State College, Pa. - The Duke fencing teams traveled to State College, Pa., on Saturday for their first of two dual meets of the weekend. The Blue Devils came away with a 1-2 record in men's and a 1-3 record in the women's.
The tenth-ranked men were led by the saber team which won 7-2 against Haverford and lost a pair of close matches to Columbia, 4-5, and Penn State, 3-6. Michael DiMarco and Peter Truszkowski were the top performers, each finishing the day with a 5-4 record. The men's team finished with a 16-11 win over Haverford, an 18-9 loss to No. 5 Columbia and a 23-4 loss to No. 3 Penn State.
The women's team also defeated Haverford, winning by a score of 18-9. They lost to No. 3 Columbia (23-4), No. 2 Penn State (21-6) and Temple (16-11). The women's epee team won 7-2 against Haverford and 6-3 against Temple. They were led by Anne Kercsmar and Dorothy Hubbard. Kercsmar finished the day 8-4 and Hubbard compiled a 7-5 overall record. The women's saber team competed without their two-time all-american, Ibtihaj Muhammad, who was battling an illness. They defeated Haverford, 8-1, and lost a close one to Temple, 4-5. Allison Schafer led the way in saber with an 8-4 mark.
The teams will conclude its weekend travels on Sunday when they head to Notre Dame, Ind. for the Notre Dame duals at 8 a.m.
