Greetings Everyone!
I hope you all had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! This past month has been quite adventurous for the Duke Women's Basketball Team. We currently are on a much needed break from classes and have been enjoying it to the fullest. It is nice being able to go to practice or games and come home right after. We don't have to worry about class, homework, and study hall. The stress level is at the all time low during Christmas break, and I know the coaches love it.
What have we been doing with all this extra time? Well, the team has visited the Ronald McDonald House located near campus to donate a meal and visit the families that are currently staying there. It is nice to see that our team has the ability to bring comfort and hope to families that are in need. I couldn't image being in their position, but I admire their strength and courage they have to overcome their trials. Not only did we provide food, the Read for the Cure program was kicked off. Emily Waner and I read the first two books, Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak and The Christmas Tree Fairy by Marion Rose. We didn't read to too many children, but as the readings continue, the books will begin to stack up for a library.
The team also found some time to adopt a family for Christmas. Every year the team has decided to donate money to buy things for needy families. This year we were able to buy things for a family of five. It was nice to know we were helping a family like this because when we went to deliver the gifts the bottom of the tree was bear. I know they were grateful, and it felt good to make things happen for others. Some other activities included going to the movies, we have created a singing group called DWB (consisting of Lindsey, Carrem, Wanisha (The Hype-man), and I), went to the Zoo, did a lot of shopping, and got a lot of rest.
This year our team wasn't fortunate to get a whole lot of time off for the holidays, but the time we did get was great. The food was great, the family atmosphere was wonderful, and the gifts are always good. My favorite food for the weekend was My MaMaws cornbread and sandtarts. I was sad to leave the great state of Texas (where I spent my Christmas break), but at least it was a great visit.
Sunny San Diego was the next stop. That place is Gorgeous! We stayed at the Westin in downtown San Diego. The rooms were so comfy! Big Fluffy beds and a great view, it couldn't get better. We went to the Zoo; I haven't been to a zoo in like nine years. It was fun, but it was very tiring! I completely understand why parents do not like to take their children! There are too many people and too many lines to see animals. In order to see everything you want you would have to stay all day.
It was a while ago, but I really have to tell you all about our visit to Texas on Dec 4-7. After practice we all had time to just shoot around. Well Coach G didn't find time to shoot; instead she found that it was time to embrace her musical talents by playing the drums. She was just banging away. The drums aren't the only thing she plays! She loves to show off her harmonica skills on road trips as well! The team was also trying to see how close they were to dunking! Chante is close but she has to get the ball thrown up for her because her hands are too small to grip the ball. If her hands were just a little bigger, she would TRULY be dunking like a man. Monique tried but she's more than 3” from accomplishing that task. Then there is me! I was just messing around because I thought there was NO chance that I would ever be able to, but I came to the conclusion that I have a chance. All I would need is two inches on my vertical and I could do it. I can grip the ball, but as of NOW I can't.
Well I hope to see you all at our upcoming games!
Until Next Time,
