DURHAM, N.C. - The fourth-ranked Duke field hockey team closed out its six-game home stand on Sunday with a 5-2 victory over Harvard. Senior Amy Stopford scored three of the five Duke goals for her first hat trick of the season, as the Blue Devils improved to 8-3 (1-2 ACC) with the win.
Duke got on the board 11 minutes into the game, as freshman Amie Survilla netted her fifth goal of the season and put the Blue Devils up 1-0.
Three minutes later, Duke capitalized on one of what would be 22 penalty corners for the Blue Devils, as Stopford scored her first goal of the day to put Duke ahead 2-0. Freshman Brooke Patterson and sophomore Marian Dickinson each tallied assists on the play.
Harvard's Devon Shapiro then got the Crimson on the board with a goal of her own, as the Crimson took advantage of what would be one of just two penalty corner opportunities on the day. Shapiro's goal put the score at 2-1 in favor of Duke.
Five minutes later, Stopford retaliated and put the Blue Devils ahead 3-1 as she netted her second goal of the day on an assist by freshman Lauren Miller.
Dickinson would then up the Blue Devil advantage to 4-1 with four minutes remaining in the first half, as senior Hilary Linton found Dickinson near the net and Dickinson netted her 13th goal of the season.
The second half saw Harvard goalie Kelly Knoche post 14 saves as the Crimson held Duke scoreless until Stopford struck again at the 55:41 mark, netting her third goal of the day and eighth of the season. The goal was a result of a penalty corner, as senior Liz Floyd and Patterson tallied assists on the play, and Duke's lead grew to 5-1.
A minute later, Tami Jafar scored for the Crimson, closing in on Duke's lead, but would get no closer as the Blue Devils came away with a 5-2 victory.
“It's hard to rally back from yesterday's disappointing loss [to Boston College],” said Duke head coach Beth Bozman. “I think we played a dominant passing game today.”
For the second consecutive day, Duke held their opponent to a single-digit shot mark as Harvard got off just two shots on the day. Knoche posted 20 saves on the day versus the Blue Devil offense, as Duke got off 39 shot attempts.
Today's win over the Crimson (0-9) was the fifth all-time for Duke, as the all-time series with Harvard now stands at 5-0 in Duke's favor.
Beginning next weekend, the Blue Devils will hit the road for five straight games, starting off at No. 1 Maryland on Oct. 7. Duke will remain in the north for two games in Philadelphia on Oct. 9 and 10 as the Blue Devils face Villanova and Drexel, respectively.
