WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. ? The Duke volleyball team posted a 3-0 (30-17, 30-26, 30-13) sweep over Wake Forest on Tuesday night at Reynolds Gym. The Blue Devils improve to 14-2 overall and 7-0 in the ACC while the Demon Deacons fall to 9-7 and 5-2, respectively.
After Wake Forest scored the first point of the match, Duke went on a 6-0 run to force a Demon Deacon timeout. Wake would cut Duke's lead to two points at 13-11 before a 7-2 Blue Devil run forced the Deacs to take their second timeout of the game. Duke then scored 10 of the next 14 points to close out game one, 30-17. The Blue Devils held Wake to a -.083 hitting percentage in the opening game.
Duke opened game two with a 7-3 advantage before a three-point Wake Forest run cut the Blue Devil lead to one at 7-6. Duke then used a 7-2 run to force a Demon Deacon timeout at 14-8. Wake managed to cut Duke's lead to one point at 22-21 with a 13-8 run but the Blue Devils held on for an exciting 30-26 game two victory to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Duke hit .326 in the second game while holding Wake to a .194 hitting percentage.
The Blue Devils took control early in game three, using a 7-1 start to force a Wake Forest timeout. The Deacs would take their second timeout of the game after an 11-6 Duke run gave the Blue Devils an 18-7 advantage. Duke then scored 12 of the next 18 points to close out the match with a 30-13 game three victory. The Blue Devils hit .500 in the final game and held the Deacs to a -.129 hitting percentage.
Junior Ali Hausfeld paced the Duke offense with a match-high 42 assists. Junior Carrie DeMange led the attack with a match-high 15 kills while senior Tealle Hunkus had 12 kills and freshman Rachael Moss added 11. Sophomores Sue Carls and Jourdan Norman chipped in six and five kills, respectively.
Junior Jenny Shull anchored the Blue Devil defense with a match-high 14 digs. Hunkus had eight digs, Moss notched seven digs, Hausfeld posted six digs and DeMange and senior Polly Bendush added five digs each.
DeMange led the defense with eight blocks, Hausfeld added three blocks and Hunkus, Moss, Carls and Norman chipped in two blocks apiece.
Duke will return to Cameron Indoor Stadium on Thursday as the Blue Devils play host to Maryland (8-8, 1-6 ACC) at 7 p.m. Duke will also host Boston College (6-10, 4-3 ACC) on Friday at 7 p.m. The Duke-Maryland match on Thursday will be carried by ACC Select, the conference's on-line video subscription package.
