PALO ALTO, CALIF.-- With two of Duke's All-America golfers in South Africa this weekend, the Blue Devils traveled to Palo Alto, Calif., for the Stanford Intercollegiate, which kicked off on Friday. After day one, Duke is in fifth place as the squad collected an eight-over-par, 292, on Friday at the 5,895-yard, par 71 Stanford Golf Course.
Leading the action after 18 holes is Arizona, who fired a seven-under-par, 277, and leads by seven strokes over Georgia (284). Rounding out the top five teams are Stanford (286), Vanderbilt (288) and Duke (292). Getting off to a quick first round lead in the individual play were Whitney Wade of Georgia and Alison Walshe of Arizona, who turned in a four-under-par, 67.
For the Blue Devils, junior Jennifer Pandolfi registered a two-under-par, 69, and is tied for fourth individually after day one. A product of Navarre, Fla., Pandolfi began the day on fire as she was three-under-par through 12 holes as she notched birdies on No. 5, No. 10 and No. 12. She closed with one birdie, two bogies and three pars over the final six holes.
Senior Anna Grzebien started her day in birdie fashion with three birdies over her first four holes and was four-under-par through No. 8. With a bogey on the ninth, she made the turn at three-under-par, 32. Grzebien, a native of Narragansett, R.I., went back to four-under-par with a birdie on the 12th, but a double-bogey on the 163-yard, par three 14th and a bogey on the 361-yard, par four 15th took her back down to one-under-par. Grzebien closed with three pars to finish with a 70, which is tied for ninth.
Blue Devil freshman Alison Whitaker rang up a one-over-par, 72, on Friday and is tied for 21st. Whitaker, who is from Melbourne, Australia, notched a tournament-best 15 pars on day one to go along with two bogies and one birdie on 386-yard, par four 13th hole.
Seeing action in their first team play of their career freshmen Rebecca Kim and Yu Young Lee struggled on Friday finishing with an 81 and 84, respectively. As a team, Duke collected 13 birdies.
The Blue Devils were playing without the services of sophomores Amanda Blumenherst and Jennie Lee, who are each playing in the 2006 Women's World Amateur Team Championship in South Africa. Both Blumenherst and Lee were All-America selections last season.
Duke will tee off on Saturday at 11:40 a.m. (EST) along with Vanderbilt and New Mexico. Each squad will play 18 holes on Saturday and Sunday to close out the tournament.
