DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke swimming and diving teams opened their seasons with wins on Saturday, as the women defeated UNC-Wilmington, 164-117, and Richmond, 165-135, and the men defeated UNC-Wilmington, 154-147.
Notching first place finishes for the Blue Devil women were Danielle Spearman (100 back), Jackie Rodriguez (100 and 200 breaststroke), Shannon Beall (100 and 200 fly) and Julie Brummond (1-meter and 3-meter diving). Duke also posted the top time in the 400 medley relay.
The women's team saw strong finishes from its freshman class, as Beall and Brummond impressed in their first collegiate meet, each posting two wins. Rodriguez also recorded two victories to start off her senior campaign.
For the Blue Devil men, Andrew Clark (1000 free and 500 free), David Hahn (100 back), Nick Campisano (3-meter diving), Eric Winnard (1-meter diving), Murillo Adrados (200 back), Eric Ness (100 fly) and Scott Champagne (200 IM) all secured wins en route to a win that avenged last season's loss to UNC-W.
The men's team also saw its freshman class step up as Winnard proved strong on the board and Ness and Clark posted wins in their first meet as a Blue Devil.
Duke's first home meet will take place on Nov. 4 at 2 p.m. as Duke takes on Maryland and N.C. State in ACC matchups.
