
Duke Advances to Consolation Finals At Match Play Championship

FORT WORTH, Texas - Duke advanced the to winners bracket consolation finals with a 3-1-1 victory over ACC rival Clemson on Monday at the Callaway Collegiate Match Play at the Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas. The Blue Devils, the ninth seed in the event, got wins from Clark Klaasen, Jake Grodzinsky and Jeff Edelman, while Michael Quagliano halved his match.
Klaasen dropped the opening hole, No. 13, in his match against David May. He responded by winning the following hole and went on to take a 3-up lead with a birdie on the par-3 fourth hole. May fought back to even the match with three straight wins on No. 9, No. 10 and No. 11, before Klaasen secured the one-up victory with win on the final hole, No. 12.
Grodzinsky was solid throughout his match with Tanner Ervin. The Cornville, Ariz., native won the opening two holes and ended a late charge from Ervin by winning three of the final four holes to close out the match 3 and 1. Edelman also posted a 3 and 1 win in a match that the Southlake, Texas, native never trailed. He opened with wins on the opening two holes and pushed his lead to 4-up with six to play before cruising on to a 3 and 1 win over Ben Martin.
Quagliano never trailed in his match either as he engaged in a back and forth battle with Sam Saunders, the grandson of golf legend Arnold Palmer. With the match all-square through 13 holes, Quagliano posted wins on No. 7 and No. 8 to take a two-up lead with three holes to play. Saunders countered with wins on No. 9 and No. 10 and both players carded fives on the final hole to keep the match at all-square.
Junior Michael Schachner fell 3 and 1 to Clemson's Kyle Stanley. The Libertyville, Ill., native battled throughout the round before Stanley took control late in the match.
With the win Duke advances on to play second-seeded Georgia in the finals of the winners consolation bracket. The Bulldogs advanced to the final with a 2-1-2 win over UCLA on Monday. In the finals of the winners bracket fourth-seeded Oklahoma State will meet 11th-seeded Lamar, while top-seed Florida will meet Texas A&M in the battle for third place. Tuesday's final round action begins at 10 a.m. (ET).
