CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-- The Duke Women's Golf team battled cold, rainy and windy conditions for the second straight day at the Tar Heel Invitational and enters the final round of action in fifth place at the 6,285-Yard, Par 72 Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Vanderbilt leads the tournament with a two day total of 595 as the Commodores posted a team-best 294 on Saturday. The host, North Carolina, is second (600), Virginia is third (604) and Texas A&M is fourth (606).
Duke originally was second in the team standings when play concluded but freshman Alison Whitaker signed for the wrong score on her second round scorecard on Saturday so the Blue Devils had to count an 86 instead of a 77. By counting the 86, Duke had a team score of 304 on day two. The Blue Devils own a 36-hole total of 607 and is 12 shots off the lead.
Sophomore Jennie Lee continues to lead the individual race as she posted her second straight round of 72 and owns a 36-hole total of 144. She leads by one stroke over Ashley Knoll of Texas A&M and Caroline Westrup of Florida State.
On the day, Lee had eight pars and one bogey over her first nine holes before making the turn at 37. Lee, who is from Henderson, Nev., got her score back to even par with a birdie on the 12th hole. A bogey on the 15th, a birdie for the second straight day on No. 16 and two pars concluded her day with a 72.
Sophomore Amanda Blumenherst carded a two-over-par, 74, on Saturday and is tied for 15th with a 150. The 2006 National Player of the Year and native of Scottsdale, Ariz., was solid all day with 14 pars, three bogies and a birdie. She entered the 17th hole at three-over-par, but notched her first birdie of the day on the 518-Yard, par-five.
After carding a 79 on Friday, senior Anna Grzebien turned in an even-par, 72, on Saturday and is tied for 20th with a two-day total of 151. Grzebien, a product of Narragansett, R.I., made the turn at one-under-par, 35, as she registered two birdies over the first nine holes. On the back nine, she made two straight bogies on No. 13 and No. 14, but had a birdie on the tough, 361-yard, par-four No. 16 as she finished with a 72.
Whitaker kicked off her morning on fire as she rang up six straight pars before notching two consecutive pars on holes seven and eight. A product of Melbourne, Australia, Whitaker made the turn at two-under-par, but struggled on the back nine going seven-over-par and finishing with a round of 77. When Whitaker signed her card, she signed for a 78 instead of a 77 and she was disqualified.
On day one, Jennifer Pandolfi turned in a four-over-par, 76, but on Saturday she couldn't get going finishing with an 86. She is tied for 70th in the individual action with a 162.
After totaling five birdies on day one, Duke had eight birdies on Saturday.
Duke will tee off on Sunday in the final round beginning at 9:00 a.m. with a shotgun start.
