Rachael Moss had a career-high 23 kills while hitting .396 and added 20 digs as the Duke volleyball team defeated Tobacco Road rival North Carolina, 3-1 (30-21, 30-23, 28-30, 30-12), Friday night in front of a season-high 1,751 fans at Cameron Indoor Stadium. With the win, Duke improves to 21-3 overall and 14-1 in the ACC while the Tar Heels fall to 6-18 and 4-11, respectively. Duke improved its home-court win streak to 28 matches dating back to the 2004 season.
Junior
Ali Hausfeld distributed the ball effectively for the Blue Devils as four players reached double-figures in kills and Duke hit .324 for the match. She dished out 58 assists, had 10 digs, four blocks and six kills while hitting .500 herself.
Game one was close at the start with five ties before the score was nine-all. Hausfeld and junior
Jenny Shull each served two old fashioned points and then senior
Polly Bendush served seven straight, including two service aces, to give Duke a 22-13 lead. The two remained even as Duke finished with a 30-21 win.
Bendush had three aces in the first game while junior
Carrie DeMange and Moss each had five kills and Shull had seven digs. Hausfeld had 14 assists while Duke hit .295 to North Carolina's .140.
Game two was closer than game one as there were 11 ties when the score was 14-14 before Bendush and senior
Tealle Hunkus helped the Blue Devils to a 5-1 run. Shull served five straight points at the end of the game before a side out gave Duke the 30-23 win.
Moss had six kills in just nine swings in the second game while Hunkus and sophomores
Jourdan Norman and
Sue Carls each had three kills. Shull added six more digs while Moss and Hausfeld each had four digs.
Game three again started out close before the Tar Heel's Ashley Board served six straight to give UNC a 19-14 lead. North Carolina looked to have the game in hand at 29-24 before DeMange served Duke to within one at 29-28 before a kill gave Carolina the game.
Duke hit a solid .333 in game three but the Tar Heels were a blistering .447 with 24 kills.
Duke came out strong in the fourth game, holding North Carolina to a Duke opponent low 12 points. Bendush served the first three points of the game and then things were somewhat even at 9-7 before Hunkus rallied seven straight from behind the service line and DeMange added another seven in a 19-3 run to put Duke up 28-10 and the Blue Devils held on for a 30-12 win.
Moss had eight kills in the final game and added five digs while Shull recorded nine digs and sophomore
Aana Wherry had several impressive defensive plays and had seven digs.
For the match, Wherry had 12 digs while Shull led the way with 23. DeMange finished with a double-double with 15 kills and 11 digs and added seven blocks, as well. Bendush finished with four service aces and five digs. Carls hit .500 with 10 kills and added two assists and two blocks.
With the win, the Blue Devils record a half point in the Carlyle Cup competition. Sponsored by Carlyle & Co., the Carlyle Cup is a Duke vs. North Carolina all-sports competition. Duke currently has a 4.5 to 1.5 lead in the race for the 2007 Cup.
Duke now has the weekend off before Wake Forest visits Cameron Indoor Stadium Tuesday at 7 p.m.
