CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Duke swimming and diving teams were defeated by the nationally ranked Tar Heels of North Carolina on Wednesday evening at UNC's Koury Natatorium.
The Duke men fell to the rival Tar Heels, 149-88, while the women were defeated, 145-89. Freshman Julie Brummond continued to impress, winning the 1-meter diving event for the Blue Devil women, notching a score of 274.80, fresh off recording an NCAA qualifying score on Saturday in a dual meet with N.C. State and Maryland.
Both Blue Devil teams saw tough competition in Chapel Hill, as the UNC men are ranked 22nd in the nation while the women are ranked 23rd. The North Carolina men's squad is now 1-2 (1-0 ACC) and the women's squad is 3-1 (1-0 ACC).
After tonight's meet, Duke holds a narrow lead in the 2006-07 Carlyle Cup standings, totaling 4.5 points to North Carolina's 3.5 points, as the Tar Heels gained two points. The Carlyle Cup is a yearlong competition between the Blue Devils and the Tar Heels sponsored by Carlyle & Co. of Greensboro, N.C., and this year's competition marks the seventh annual competition, as the all-time series is tied, 3-3.
The Blue Devil men fall even at 2-2 (1-2 ACC) on the season and the women's squad drops to 3-2 (1-2 ACC). Duke will be in action next at the Patriot Invitational, held in Fairfax, Va., on Nov. 17-19.
