DURHAM, N.C.-- Soccer Buzz has released its 2006 All-Region accolades with four Duke Women's Soccer student-athletes earning All-Southeast honors. Senior Rebecca Moros and sophomore Christie McDonald were named to the second team, while freshmen Elisabeth Redmond and KayAnne Gummersall earned All-Freshman accolades.
A product of Larchmont, N.Y., Moros totaled four goals, three assists and 11 points in her final year with the Blue Devils. Moros received second team All-Region honors for the third straight year. The 5-5 midfielder also earned 2006 NSCAA/adidas All-America accolades for the first time in her career, while earning first team All-ACC honors as a junior and senior.
Moros started all 21 games in 2006 and finished her career playing in 86 contests, scoring 15 goals, collecting 20 assists and posting 50 points. Her 20 assists ranks tied for fifth on the Blue Devil career charts. One of the best memories for Moros in a Blue Devil uniform came on Oct. 9, 2005 as she scored two goals to guide Duke to a 2-1 victory over top-ranked and undefeated North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C.
McDonald, who is a native of Newnan, Ga., moved from the offensive end to defender in 2006 and led the Blue Devils to nine shutouts. She scored one goal and assisted on one other, while taking 12 shots on the season. McDonald made one of the most remarkable comebacks in NCAA sports in 2006 as she had brain surgery in May to remove a tumor and came back to start the season opener in August.
Two of the top freshmen in the nation-- Gummersall and Redmond-- provided much needed scoring for the Blue Devils in 2006 as the combined for 10 goals and nine assists. Gummersall, who is from Wilmette, Ill., led Duke in scoring with seven goals and two assists for 16 points. She played in all 21 contests, while starting six matches. Redmond, a product of Morristown, N.J., started 19 of 21 matches and led Duke with seven assists. The 5-6 forward/midfielder also scored three goals and had 13 points on the year.
Duke posted a 9-8-4 overall and 5-4-1 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) mark in 2006. The Blue Devils advanced to the second round of the NCAA College Cup before falling in penalty kicks to Tennessee.
