DURHAM, N.C. ? Juniors Danny Otero and Jonathan Anderson combined for a four-hit shutout to lead the Duke Blue Devils to a 6-0 win over Radford on Friday afternoon at Jack Coombs Field. The Blue Devils improve to 3-5 on the season while the Highlanders fall to 0-4.
Otero (2-0) picked up his second win of the year, holding the Highlanders to four hits in 6.0 innings of work. The right-hander also tied his career high with six strikeouts. Anderson earned his first career save, pitching 3.0 perfect innings with one strikeout.
“We had a great pitching performance today,” stated Duke Head Coach Sean McNally. “I thought that was the key. Both guys were throwing strikes. We also had some timely hitting which was key. To score six runs on five hits, you're maximizing your hits. It's a good feeling and it's a good way to start the series.”
The Blue Devils used a five-run sixth inning to break open a 1-0 game. Anderson led off the frame with a bunt single before advancing to second on a throwing error by Radford second baseman David Landman. After left fielder Javier Socorro drew a walk, right fielder Tim Sherlock hit a grounder back to Radford starter Justin Morgan, who threw the ball into center field in an attempt to get Socorro out at second base. Shortstop Brett Bartles then laced a two-run single down the right field line to score Anderson and Socorro.
Sophomore Jimmy Gallagher came in to pinch hit and delivered with a bases clearing triple to left, scoring Sherlock and Bartles to make it a 5-0 game. Catcher Matt Williams capped the five-run inning with a sacrifice bunt to score Gallagher.
Duke took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. After Sherlock hit a one-out single, Bartles tripled down the right field line to give the Blue Devils the first run of the game.
Bartles led Duke at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Gallagher went 1-for-1 with two RBI and a run scored, Sherlock was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and Anderson went 1-for-3 with a run scored for the Blue Devils.
Morgan (0-2) suffered his second loss of the season, allowing four runs on three hits in 5.0 innings of work.
Game two of the three-game series will be tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Jack Coombs Field. Duke and Radford will then wrap up their series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
