CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - J.J. Redick scored 35 points, the most ever by a Duke player at North Carolina, including a three-pointer with less than a minute left to give the Blue Devils (22-1, 10-0 ACC) a seven point lead, and Duke was able to hold on for an 87-83 win over the 23rd-ranked Tar Heels (14-6, 5-4 ACC).
Redick scored 22 after halftime and and added four steals in 39 minutes. Freshman Josh McRoberts had one of his best performances with 17 points, five rebounds and a perfect 4-of-4 performance from the free throw line. Sean Dockery hit four three pointers and Shelden Williams just missed a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds while adding four blocks, four steals and three assists. Greg Paulus recorded seven assists and two steals for Duke. Paulus and McRoberts each hit two big free throws in the final seconds for the Blue Devils.
Williams became the third player in NCAA history along with Pervis Ellison and David Robinson to record 1,500 points, 1,000 rebounds, 350 blocks and 150 steals in a career.
Reyshawn Terry scored a three-pointer out of the gate for North Carolina and the Tar Heels held an early 5-4 advantage before Redick scored the game's next nine points to put Duke up 13-5 early. A Wes Miller triple brought North Carolina to within one at 26-25 before Duke pushed the lead back to seven behind a pair of Dockery three-pointers at 36-29 and Duke held a 40-35 advantage at the break.
Redick and McRoberts both hit a pair of jumpers, including McRoberts second three-pointer of the season, as Duke opened the second half on a 12-0 run to push the lead to 17 at 52-35. Duke would then fail to score for over five minutes as the Tar Heels cut the lead to 56-51 before Redick hit a three-pointer and then stole the ball and hit a lay-up at the mid-point of the second half put Duke back up by 10 at 61-51.
North Carolina went on a 10-0 run and a pair of Terry three-pointers tied the game at 61 and and Carolina pushed the run to 20-5 to take a 71-66 lead with just five minutes remaining. Redick hit a three and pair of free throws and Dockery a triple to give Duke the lead back at 74-73 with under three minutes remaining.
Miller hit a pair of free throws for North Carolina and Williams countered by hitting a pair of his own for Duke and then Redick got himself open to hit a three-pointer and McRoberts hit a pair of free throws to put Duke up by six and Redick countered a pair of free throws with another huge three-pointer to put Duke up seven at 84-77.
Tyler Hansbrough and Bobby Frasor each hit a pair of free throws and Frasor hit a running-jumper in the in a span of 12 seconds to pull North Carolina to within one at 84-83. Paulus hit a pair of free throws and Williams got a huge rebound and hit a free throw to put the game to two possessions with just 3.4 seconds remaining.
With the win, Duke picks up a point in the Carlyle Cup standings. The Carlyle Cup ? an all-sports competition between Duke and North Carolina ? is in its sixth year of existence and sponsored by Carlyle & Co., a Greensboro-based jeweler. The Tar Heels hold a 7.0 - 6.0 advantage this year.
Duke will now turn around and head to Maryland Saturday for a 1 p.m. contest on CBS. The Terps came back against Virginia Tuesday night to improve to 15-7 overall and 5-4 in the ACC.
