March 16, 2006 - The Landlord's Song And Video Highlights
As a member of the Duke radio broadcast team, I have the privilege of watching every minute of every Blue Devil game. As a producer for the Inside Basketball television show, I get to review many of those minutes several times over while searching for the best clips to use in features and highlight packages.
Over the past week, I have been going through more videotape than usual in preparing some of the season-ending features for our show. Yes, I actually get paid to do this, and yes I feel fortunate to have the job, although it doesn't always feel like stealing money with the hours that are sometimes required to fit everything together.
This week and last I have been trying to compile the best J.J. Redick and Shelden Williams clips of the year. If you're reading this, you follow the team pretty closely so you know there is a lot to choose from. Believe me, there's even more than you think when you consider just how many replays are available from multiple camera angles at many games.
Since J.J. and Shelden are two of the best players in the country and in Duke history, we thought it would be nice to package their final extended interviews on our show with music videos of their senior season. We commissioned a pair of original songs for this, called Landlord and Shooting Star. Their names aren't included in the lyrics, but you get the point. Chris Wimberley and Chris Anderson of Nightsound Studios wrote, performed, recorded and mixed the songs for us. We ran Landlord last week and will use Shooting Star this week.
Each video is about two and a half minutes in length. I haven't counted, but I'm guessing there are about 30 clips in each, chosen from hundreds of possibilities. By the time you get to the end of a season like this one, it's easy to forget some of the better clips from earlier in the year. I'm sure everyone who follows the Blue Devils can run off a list of big plays they enjoyed; lately my memory has been jogged with some of the replays I've sorted through.
Josh McRoberts and DeMarcus Nelson have certainly been involved in a few with some of their high-flying dunks (and you should have seen the slams Josh delivered at Duke's Greensboro workout on Wednesday). (IA Members: Nelson vs. Seton Hall and McRoberts vs. Wake Forest) J.J.'s dunk at Boston College was one to remember, but seeing a replay yesterday from the backboard camera reminded me of just how spectacularly it was set up: Greg Paulus was trying to save a ball beyond midcourt, under defensive pressure, and heaved a perfect pass as he was falling out of bounds, much like a quarterback eluding a blitzing linebacker. J.J. caught it on the run and finished with the slam. (IA Members: Check Out The Play)
Greg had another of those passes that might best be appreciated in semi-slow motion at the Virginia game, when he was coming down the left side of the floor and zipped a bounce pass to a spot on the right. There was no receiver in the frame initially, then DeMarcus flew in, scooped it up and dunked. Again, a perfect lead pass by the quarterback. (IA Members: Check Out The Play)
Sean Dockery's shot to beat Virginia Tech would have to make any big-play list from 2005-06, especially from the midcourt bleacher camera where you could see Dock's forward momentum and lean on the release of his buzzer-beater, as well as the reaction when it went down. (IA Members: Check Out The Play) Lee Melchionni's three-pointer from the top of the key after a missed free throw against N.C. State (the six-point possession) looked pretty sweet from the backboard camera (IA Members: Check Out The Play).
One of the best clips I saw all season was shot at the Duke-UNC game in Chapel Hill by Charlie Mickens of ABC-11, the station that airs Inside Basketball in the Triangle. Charlie was positioned on the baseline at the Duke end of the floor in the second half when J.J. came driving down court with about a minute to play and the Devils ahead by four. UNC's Marcus Ginyard was marking J.J. stride for stride. J.J. was dribbling right-handed, then when he got to the three-point arc he slowed down, put the ball behind his back and went to his left hand. It took Ginyard a second to react to J.J.'s change of pace, and while he was shifting his momentum, J.J. stepped behind the arc for a wide open three that essentially secured the victory. All of this took place just a few feet in front of Charlie's camera and he caught every subtlety in this vintage Redick moment. (IA Members: Check Out The Play)
Of all the J.J. shots this year ? and there have been 127 makes from three-point range alone ? that's one of my favorite clips. Another was not a shot at all, but a reaction. After a key play in the second half of the N.C. State game, J.J. jogged over to the bench where he and Coach K exchanged a vigorous high-five. You could probably count on one hand the number of times there's been a scene like that over the last 26 years, but it was the perfect example of the bond, connection and investment those two have shared.
As far as Shelden goes, one of my favorite clips this year came in the Texas game when he dove on the floor for a loose ball and tapped it to J.J., who was standing behind the arc and drained a three-pointer. (IA Members: Check Out The Play) That one didn't fit in the Landlord music video for our show, but if you'd like to see the ones that did, and hear the song, we've provided the music video for free. There are also some other clips mentioned above as part of the subscription package for Inside Access as well as an interview with Mike Gminski on Williams. Hope you enjoy!
