TALLAHASSEE, Fla. ? Florida State starter Bryan Henry threw eight hitless innings to lead the top-ranked Seminoles to a 7-2 victory over the Duke Blue Devils on Friday night at Dick Howser Stadium. The Blue Devils fall to 8-19 overall and 1-6 in the ACC while the Seminoles improve to 23-2 overall and 6-1 in league play.
Henry (7-0) took a no-hitter into the top of the ninth before allowing back-to-back singles to left fielder Daniel Palmer and third baseman Adam Murray. The right-handed junior recorded a career-high 12 strikeouts to pick up his seventh victory of the season.
Florida State took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. After center fielder Shane Robinson led off the inning with a single to left, the reigning Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Year stole second and then advanced to third when the throw from catcher Matt Williams scooted underneath shortstop Brett Bartles' glove into center. Right fielder Jack Rye followed with an RBI-infield single, scoring Robinson for the first run of the game.
The Seminoles scored four unearned runs in the bottom of the second to take a 5-0 lead. Shortstop Buster Posey started the frame with a single to right center before advancing to third on a double by second baseman Tony Thomas Jr. After left fielder Ryan Strauss struck out swinging, designated hitter Mark Gildea drew a walk to load the bases. Robinson then reached on an error that allowed Posey to score from third. Rye followed with a two-run single through the right side to score Thomas and Gildea. First baseman Dennis Guinn then capped the inning with an RBI-single to left.
Florida State added a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth on RBI-singles by Guinn and Thomas to take a 7-0 lead.
Palmer recorded Duke's first hit of the game in the bottom of the ninth with a single up the middle. Murray then followed with a single to left to give the Blue Devils runners on first and second. After center fielder Jonathan Anderson struck out looking, designated Tim Sherlock was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Right fielder Jimmy Gallagher would later line a two-run single to center, scoring Palmer and Murray to break up Henry's shutout.
Duke starter Danny Otero (4-2) suffered his second loss of the season, allowing five runs on nine hits in 5.0 innings of work. Of the five runs charged to Otero, only one was earned.
Game two of the series is slated for 6 p.m. tomorrow night while Sunday's series finale is set for 12 noon.
