ST. LOUIS - J.J. Redick and Shelden Williams were both named First Team All-Americas by the United States Basketball Writers Association, announced Tuesday by the organization. Redick was also recognized as the District III Player of the Year while Williams was on the All-District III team, as well.
The USBWA also recognizes the National Player of the Year with the presentation of the Oscar Robertson Trophy, announced March 31 at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis at the 2006 Final Four.
Redick and Williams become just the third pair of teammates selected to the first team in the same season since 1985 when the USBWA started recognizing a first and second team. Prior to 1985, there was no distinction between a first and second team. Duke's Shane Battier and Jason Williams in 2001 and Kansas' Raef LaFrentz and Paul Pierce in 1998 are the only other pair of teammates selected to the first team in the same season.
Redick is a repeat selection on the USBWA squad, giving Duke seven players in program history named to the team more than once. North Carolina is next on the list of multiple winners with five while Kansas, Notre Dame and Utah have each had three repeat winners in the award's history. Duke's other repeat selections are Art Heyman (1962, '63), Danny Ferry (1988, '89), Christian Laettner, (1991, '92), Grant Hill (1993, '94), Trajan Langdon (1998, '99) and Jason Williams (2000, '01).
Since the distinction between a first and second team in 1985, Redick is just one of 10 players named to the first team twice. That list includes Danny Manning, Chris Jackson, Larry Johnson, Jimmy Jackson, Shaquielle O'Neal, Tim Duncan, Raef LaFrentz, Mateen Cleaves and Jason Williams.
Redick, Williams and the rest of the Blue Devils (27-3) continue to prepare for the 2006 ACC Tournament. Duke will face the winner of Thursday's Clemson-Miami match-up at 12 p.m. on Friday.
