DURHAM, N.C. ? Right fielder Evan Ocheltree hit a pair of two-run homers and first baseman Allan Dykstra and second baseman Grant Achilles added a long ball each to lead Wake Forest to a 10-2 win over Duke on Saturday afternoon at Jack Coombs Field. The Blue Devils fall to 12-28 overall and 4-13 in the ACC while the Demon Deacons improve to 27-12 overall and 11-6 in league play.
Wake Forest jumped out to a commanding 3-0 lead in the opening frame. Leadoff hitter Matt Antonelli singled up the middle and stole second to start the game. After shortstop Dustin Hood lined out to first and Dykstra fouled out to the catcher, designated hitter Brett Linnenkohl laced an RBI-single through the right side to score Antonelli. Ocheltree then blasted a 1-0 pitch over the right field wall for a two-run jack.
After taking a 4-0 lead in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly by Antonelli, the Demons Deacons got another two-run homer from Ocheltree in the top of the third to grab a 6-0 lead. Dykstra singled to right to start the frame and two batters later, Ocheltree turned on another 1-0 pitch and sent it sailing over the right field wall for his fifth home run of the season.
The Demon Deacons recorded their third two-run jack of the game in the top of the fourth to take an 8-0 lead. With one on and two out, Dykstra hammered a 1-1 offering to right for his ACC-leading 14th homer of the season. It was the second home run in as many days for Dykstra, who hit a towering solo shot in Friday night's 10-9 victory.
Hood added an RBI-triple to right center in the top of the sixth to extend Wake's lead to 9-0.
Duke second baseman Javier Socorro drilled an RBI-ground-rule double to center in the bottom of the sixth to put the Blue Devils on the board. After shortstop Brett Bartles reached on a one-out error by Antonelli, designated hitter Nate Freiman singled through the left side to give Duke a runner in scoring position. Socorro then lined his ground-rule double to center on a 2-2 pitch to score Bartles.
The Blue Devils added another run in the bottom of the seventh to make it a 9-2 ballgame. Catcher Matt Williams reached on an infield single to begin the inning. After third baseman Adam Murray flew out to center and left fielder Daniel Palmer lined out to the shortstop, right fielder Jimmy Gallagher and Bartles drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Freiman then delivered a two-out RBI-single to left field to score Williams.
Achilles hit his first home run of the season on an 0-1 pitch in the top of the eighth to cap the scoring at 10-2.
Wake Forest starter Eric Niesen improved to 3-0 on the season, holding the Blue Devils to one run on four hits in 6.0 innings of work.
Duke starter Tony Bajoczky fell to 1-8 on the year after allowing eight runs on eight hits in 4.0 innings pitched.
Freiman, Williams and center fielder Jonathan Anderson each recorded a pair of hits to lead Duke at the plate.
Ocheltree went 3-for-5 with four RBI to pace Wake Forest. Dykstra and left fielder Tyler Smith both added a pair of hits for the Deacs in the win.
The Blue Devils and the Demon Deacons will wrap up their three-game series at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
