DURHAM, N.C.? Duke Women's Soccer head coach Robbie Church released the 2006 women's soccer schedule on Wednesday, which includes matches against 12 squads who advanced to the 2005 NCAA Tournament. The Blue Devils stand ready though, as they return eight of 11 starters and 17 letterwinners in all from a squad that collected a 14-6-1 record last year and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Blue Devils kick off the season at home on Friday, August 25 against Saint Louis University and then will host Western Carolina on Sunday, Aug. 27 at 5:00 p.m. Duke will then hit the road for four straight contests against Yale and Connecticut in the North-South Challenge in New Haven, Conn. during Labor Day weekend. The Blue Devils will then travel to Birmingham, Ala. for two contests against University of Alabama-Birmingham and Kansas before returning home to host the annual Duke adidas Classic.
Featured in the 2006 Duke Classic will be North Carolina, Marquette and Florida with games taking place on Sept. 15, 17.
Duke will open the always tough Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) slate on Sept. 21 at Virginia Tech. The Blue Devils will play Virginia, Wake Forest, Maryland and Miami on the road, while hosting Boston College, N.C. State, North Carolina, Clemson and Florida State.
Duke's 2006 opponents who qualified for the NCAA Tournament last year include Connecticut, Yale, Western Carolina, Florida, St. Louis, Marquette, Virginia, Boston College, North Carolina, Wake Forest, Clemson, and Florida State.
The Blue Devils posted a 14-6-1 overall record in 2005 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament before falling to 22nd-ranked Yale, 2-1. The Blue Devils will return eight of 11 starters and welcome the third-ranked recruiting class in the nation. Church enters his sixth year as the head coach of the Blue Devils and owns a 60-40-5 record.
The Blue Devils return five of the top six scorers from last year-- Darby Kroyer (17 points), Sarah McCabe (14), Rebecca Moros (12), Christie McDonald (11) and Lauren Tippets (11). Rising junior Allison Lipsher returns to anchor the goalkeeper position after registering a career-best nine shutouts and a 0.59 goals against average last season.
All home matches are played at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C.
