DURHAM, N.C. ? Rising junior Laura Kurz has announced she will not return to the Duke women's basketball program and is expected to transfer to Villanova. Kurz, a native of Lower Gwynedd, Pa., saw action in 65 games for the Blue Devils over the past two years.
“We love Laura and think the world of her,” said Duke Head Coach Gail Goestenkors. “We understand she wanted to get more playing time and she will have more of an opportunity there at Villanova. I wish her the best of luck in the future and we will miss her.”
Kurz was a member of Duke's highly-rated recruiting class in 2004 which also included Chante Black and Wanisha Smith. Last season, Kurz came off the bench in 30 of Duke's 35 contests, while averaging 5.4 points and 2.4 rebounds in 11.6 minutes a contest. The 6-1 wing hit 53.9 percent of her field goals and 44.2 percent of her three-pointers.
Over the last two years, Kurz was one of Duke's best three-point shooters hitting 56 of 125 attempts for a 44.8 percentage. She averaged 5.6 points and 2.3 rebounds in 13.6 career minutes a game.
“These last two years at Duke have been a great experience,” said Kurz. “I would like to thank my teammates, coaches and everyone else in the Blue Devil program for making it such a great experience. I just think I will be able to maximize my potential at another school to close out my career.”
A five-year letterwinner at Germantown Academy, Kurz finished her stellar prep career as the school's all-time leading scorer with 2,247 points. As a senior, she averaged 22.5 points, 10.1 rebounds, 2.3 steals and 1.6 assists, while being selected fourth team Parade All-America. In her final year at Germantown, Kurz hit 57.0 percent of her field goals and 59.0 percent from downtown.
Duke, which advanced to the NCAA Final Four for the fourth time in school history last season, will boast a 2005-06 roster of 11 which includes two seniors (Lindsey Harding and Alison Bales), three juniors (Chante Black, Wanisha Smith and Emily Waner), four sophomores (Keturah Jackson, Brittany Mitch, Abby Waner and Carrem Gay) and two freshmen (Bridgette Mitchell and Joy Cheek). The Blue Devils return three starters off of the 31-4 squad which advanced to the National Championship game.
