DURHAM, N.C. - The fifth-ranked Duke field hockey team picked up its second consecutive and third shutout of the season on Saturday as the Blue Devils defeated Appalachian State, 7-0, at Williams Field.
Duke got on the board early as senior Cara-Lynn Lopresti found sophomore Ashley Pultorak near the net and Pultorak netted her fourth goal of the season. Five minutes later, freshman Amie Survilla scored, picking up her second goal on the season and putting the Blue Devils up 2-0.
At the 30:20 mark, Marian Dickinson scored what would be one of three consecutive goals for the sophomore on an assist by Lopresti, as Duke found itself up 3-0 at halftime.
Dickinson would then net two goals in less than two minutes, picking up her first hat trick of the season and second of her career, pushing the Blue Devils ahead 5-0. The midfielder now has eight goals on the season, surpassing last season's individual total of seven.
At the 48:07 mark, Duke struck again as Survilla netted her second goal of the game and third of the season on an assist from Lopresti - her third of the game - giving the Blue Devils a 6-0 advantage. Duke would then capitalize on what was one of 15 penalty corners on the day, as freshman Lauren Miller netted the game's final goal at the 63-minute mark and the Blue Devils came away with the 7-0, shutout victory.
“It was nice to see a lot of people score and seize the opportunity,” said head coach Beth Bozman. “I have to congratulate Appalachian State's goalkeeper; she had a lot of saves today.”
Duke held Appalachian State (0-6) shotless, while the Blue Devils got off 41 shots on the day, as Mountaineer goalkeeper Mikayla Paulson recorded 22 saves. The senior had just six career saves before today's matchup with Duke. The Blue Devils forced zero penalty corners, while receiving 15.
No. 5 Duke improved to 6-1 on the season today and will be in action tomorrow at Williams Field as they host No. 3 Old Dominion, who was 5-1 going into action this weekend. The game is set to begin at 1 p.m.
