ROCKY FACE, GA - Michael Schachner and Clark Klaasen each fired one-over 73s on Saturday in the second round of the Carpet Capital Collegiate at The Farm Golf Club. As a team, the Blue Devils shot a seven-over 295 to slip into a tie for 13th place with a two-day score of 584 (+8).
Clemson (-18, 558) leads the event by three strokes over Alabama (-15, 561) with Florida (-7, 569), Tennessee (-5, 571), Georgia State (-4, 572) and North Carolina State (-4, 572) rounding out the top five. North Carolina State's Darren Blair shot a three-under 69 on Saturday to retain the individual lead at 10-under (65-69=134).
Schachner got off to a slow start in the second round with bogeys on each of the first two holes. He responded by playing the next 14 holes at four-under with birdies on No.3, No. 5, No. 11 and No. 12. The Libertyville, Ill., native closed by bogeying three of the final four holes to drop into a tie for 16th at two-under (69-73=142).
Klaasen opened with a birdie on the opening hole and added birdies on No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 to fired a three-under 33 on the front nine. He carded five pars and four bogeys on the backside to close the second day of action tied for 25th with a one-under 143 (70-73).
Senior Jake Grodzinsky rebounded from a six-over 78 on Friday to shot a +2 74 in the second round. The Cornville, Ariz., native shot a three-over 39 on the front side before carding three birdies on the back nine to move into a tie for 72nd at +8 (78-74=152).
Sophomore Andrew Giuliani fired a 38-37=75 on Saturday for his first counted round as a Blue Devil. Through two rounds, Giuliani is tied for 77th with a nine-over 153. Michael Quagliano struggled through the opening 12 holes in the second round and was sitting at six-over following a bogey on No. 12. He played the final six holes at two-under with birdies on No. 16 and No. 17 to close the day tied for 50th at four-over (72-76=148).
Duke begins final round action at the Carpet Capital Collegiate on Sunday at 8:45 a.m. The Blue Devils, along with Vanderbilt and Texas Christian, begin play on No. 10. For live scoring updates log on to golfstat.com.
