DAYTONA BEACH, FLA.?After struggling on day one of the 2006 Golf Daytona Beach NCAA Fall Preview, the top-ranked Duke Women's Golf Team fired a team-best round of even-par, 288, on Saturday to move into third place with one round remaining at the LPGA International's Legends Course in Daytona Beach, Fla.
The Blue Devils (594) are 10 strokes behind Georgia (584), who finished seven-over-par, 295, on day two and are six strokes behind Auburn (588). Rounding out the top-10 are Virginia (598), Arizona State (598), Wake Forest (598), Vanderbilt (599), Tennessee (601), UCLA (602) and Arkansas (604).
After carding 14 birdies on Friday, Duke fired 18 birdies on the second day of action as the Blue Devils started on hole 10. Senior Anna Grzebien led the Duke charge with a three-under-par, 69, on Saturday. Grzebien, a native of Narragansett, R.I., made the turn at one-over-par, 37, but registered four birdies on the back nine with no bogies, including birdies on the final two holes. She moved into a tie for seventh in the individual action with a 36-hole total of 146.
Leading the individual play is Tennessee's Nicole Smith, 142, with Virginia's Leah Wigger (144) in second place.
Sophomore Amanda Blumenherst notched a two-over-par, 74, on Saturday and is also tied for seventh. Fellow sophomore Jennie Lee rebounded from a 78 on Friday with an even-par, 72, and is tied for 29th.
Rounding out the Blue Devil scores were junior Jennifer Pandolfi and freshman Alison Whitaker with rounds of 73 and 75, respectively. Pandolfi, who is from Navarre, Fla.,
is tied for 41st after carding three birdies and playing the final 10 holes at even par. Whitaker, a product of Melbourne, Australia, started with a rough beginning as she was five-over-par through six holes, but notched three straight birdies on 16, 17 and 18 to close out her front nine.
Duke will tee off on Sunday along with Georgia and Auburn with a shotgun start at 8:00 a.m.
