DURHAM, N.C. ? Duke (6-3, 0-1 ACC) returns home for only the second time this season on Wednesday when the Blue Devils host Campbell (2-10-1, 1-4 CAA) and The Citadel (1-4, 0-0 SoCon) at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Meet time is set for 7 p.m., and it will be the first of three consecutive meets that Duke hosts in the coming eight days.
The Blue Devils: Duke is 6-3 on the season and 0-1 in the ACC, with seven more head-to-head matches awaiting them. Four starting wrestlers have stood out this season for Duke. Redshirt freshman John Barone has a 17-7 record at 174 and 184 pounds, with five pins. His record is good for Duke's best individual winning percentage this season, and he is 7-2 in dual meets. Sophomore Addison Nuding is 10-7 thus far this season with a team-best 8-1 record in dual meets. Nuding competes at 157 pounds and also has one fall on the year. At 165 pounds, redshirt sophomore Aaron Glover boasts a 14-10 overall mark, a 7-2 showing in dual matches, and two pins. Junior Wes Kuser has been strong for the Blue Devils at 141 pounds, going 12-9 on the year. Kuser is tied with Barone for the most falls on Duke's team with five, and is 3-1 in duals.
The Opponents: Campbell, located in Buies Creek, N.C., is 2-10-1 in 2006-07, and 1-4 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Camels met the Blue Devils last season in a meet that Duke won 37-3 at Campbell. They are led by three wrestlers this season: redshirt freshman Kelin Bidelspach at 141 pounds, sophomore Steve Wiktorek at 149/157 pounds, and senior Brent Poynter at 165/174 pounds. Bidelspach is 9-6 on the season with two falls and a 4-2 dual meet record. Wiktorek leads the team in pins with five, and boasts a 7-3 overall mark and a 5-1 record in duals. Poynter is 11-9 this season with one fall and a 7-6 dual meet showing.
The Citadel is 1-4 this year and 0-0 in the Southern Conference. The Bulldogs defeated Duke at home in Charleston, S.C. last year by a score of 28-12. Duke will face three of The Citadel's strongest wrestlers in 149-pound redshirt junior Levy Duyn, 157-pound redshirt senior Travis Piccard, and 174-pound junior Darius Caldwell. Duyn is 13-10 on the year with an astounding 11 pins, and is 3-2 in dual meets. Piccard has compiled an 11-3 mark this season, including a perfect 3-0 in duals. Caldwell is 12-9 with three falls and a 4-1 dual meet record.
Last Time Out: Duke last competed on Jan. 20 in a quad meet in Murrysville, Pa. The Blue Devils defeated York, Apprentice, and Duquesne by respective scores of 25-10, 27-11, and 24-13. Nuding and Glover both went 3-0 on the day for Duke
Campbell went 1-3 at the CAA Duals in Fairfax, Va. on Jan. 19-20. They defeated Wagner 40-6 before losing to Boston University 37-6, Sacred Heart 34-18, and Binghamton 33-12.
The Citadel's last competition was Jan. 12 at the Virginia Duals in Hampton, Va. The Bulldogs lost all three meets: Kent St. 40-6, Liberty 24-21, and Wyoming 26-13.
Common Opponents: Duke and Campbell have had two common dual opponents and both competed in one of the same tournaments this season. The Blue Devils beat Wagner 40-6 on Nov. 11 while the Camels downed Wagner 41-9 on Jan. 19. Both teams lost to N.C. State on the road; Duke by a score of 26-15 on Jan. 10 and Campbell on Nov. 8, 34-13. At the Southern Scuffle in Greensboro on Dec. 29-30, Duke placed 26th and Campbell finished 27th.
Duke and The Citadel both entered The Citadel Open on Nov. 4, the Reno Tournament of Champions Dec. 20, and the Southern Scuffle Dec. 29-30. At The Citadel, both teams placed five wrestlers, while the Bulldogs had two champions and the Blue Devils had one. In Reno, Nev., Duke came in 23rd and The Citadel placed 17th, and in Greensboro, the Blue Devils edged out the Bulldogs by placing 26th to their 29th.
Shvartsman Shimmying Up The Wins List: Senior Daniel Shvartsman continues to move up on the Blue Devils' career wins list. He currently ranks 12th with 78 career victories. Shvartsman is one win behind Jim Walsh in 11th place, and 27 wins behind all-time leader Bradd Weber.
A Look Ahead: The Blue Devils will continue their three-meet homestand on Saturday at 6 p.m. when Maryland comes to Cameron Indoor Stadium. On Wed., Jan. 31, the Blue Devils will host North Carolina in a meet that will take place at Chapel Hill High School at 7 p.m.
