DURHAM, N.C. - The 10th-ranked Blue Devil field hockey team will travel to Newark, Del., this weekend to close out its non-conference slate, as the Blue Devils (9-6, 1-3 ACC) take on Delaware and Penn on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Both games are set for 1 p.m. starts and will be played at the University of Delaware's Rullo Stadium.
Scouting the Blue Hens: Delaware is coming off a 7-0 loss to No. 2 Maryland (Oct. 14), as the Blue Hens are currently on a four-game losing streak. Delaware, which began the season with seven straight wins and has since gone 2-6, brings a record of 9-6 (2-3 CAA) into the contest with Duke. The Blue Hens are led by Casey Howard who leads the squad in goals (10) and points (22), and Jackie Tait, who leads Delaware in assists (five). Delaware has out-scored its opponents by a margin of 40-29, and the Blue Hens hold a 172-148 advantage in shots. The opposition is out-cornering Delaware, 78-65, and has notched 71 saves to the Blue Hens' 47 stops.
Series History: Duke leads the all-time series with Delaware, 5-0, as the Blue Devils last came away with a 5-1 victory in Durham, N.C. (Aug. 27, 2006).
Scouting the Quakers: Penn heads into the weekend with a mark of 6-7 (2-2 Ivy), as the Quakers will host Yale on Friday evening before heading to Delaware to take on the Blue Devils. The Quakers are coming off a 1-0 overtime loss to Columbia (Oct. 14) and have lost two straight contests after compiling a three-game winning streak prior to those games. Penn is led by Meghan Rose, who leads the team in points (14) and assists (four), and is tied for the most goals (five) with Magaretha Ehret and Nicole Black. Quaker goalie Alanna Butera is averaging 2.71 saves per game and boasts a .717 save percentage for the year, as Penn has recorded 71 saves to its opponents' 68. The opposition holds the advantage in corners (88-83) and shots (154-142), while the Quakers and their foes have each scored 28 goals on the year.
Series History: Duke's meeting with Penn on Sunday marks the first ever matchup between the two schools.
Last Time Out: The Blue Devils came away with two victories on the road last weekend, as then-No.11 Duke defeated Longwood, 4-0, and then-No. 10 Old Dominion, 4-1, at ODU's Foreman Field.
In the shutout win over the Lancers, junior Laura Suchoski netted two goals while classmate Marian Dickinson and sophomore Lauren Miller each added one tally. Senior goalie Caitlin Williams notched one save on one Longwood shot for the day.
In a win that avenged an early season loss to the Lady Monarchs, Dickinson recorded two goals and Miller and sophomore Amie Survilla added one apiece. Williams recorded five saves on the day.
Duke in the Rankings: The Blue Devils currently rank 10th in the STX/NFHCA Poll, released on Oct. 16. Archrival North Carolina remains in the top spot and Maryland ranks second, as both squads are undefeated going into the weekend at 16-0. Wake Forest (9-4) ranks third and Michigan (11-4) sits at No. 4 and Iowa (12-2) comes in at No. 5. All six ACC schools are ranked in the top 20, as Boston College (8-5) is listed at No. 12 and Virginia (7-6) comes in at No. 19.
A Look Ahead: Duke closes out the regular season next Saturday with an ACC contest at Virginia at 1 p.m. The ACC Tournament is slated for Nov. 1-4 and will be held in Chestnut Hill, Mass., hosted by Boston College.
DUFH News & Notes: Junior Marian Dickinson leads Duke in assists (seven) and points (23) and is tied with sophomore Amie Survilla for tops on the squad in goals (eight) ... Survilla ranks second in points (16) ... Dickinson was named ACC Field Hockey Player of the Week on Oct. 2 for a four-goal performance in wins over Boston College and Boston University ... senior goalie Caitlin Williams ranks first in the ACC in saves (85) and saves per game (5.67) and fourth in save percentage (.773) and goals against average (1.66) ... Williams' 85 saves on the season surpass her season total of 74 from a year ago ... Duke holds a 217-177 shot advantage over its opponents on the season, and has also tallied 108 penalty corners to the opposition's 93 ... The Blue Devils have outscored their foes, 35-25, and Williams has recorded 85 saves for the Blue Devils on the year to opponents' keepers 88 stops ...
