DURHAM, N.C. - The 12th-ranked Blue Devil field hockey team will close out its 2007 home schedule on Saturday with an ACC contest versus defending NCAA Champion and No. 2 Maryland at 1 p.m. at Williams Field. Duke holds a mark of 4-3 at Williams Field this year and has out-scored its opponents 16-9 on its own turf.
Scouting the Terrapins: Maryland is unbeaten at 12-0 (3-0 ACC) coming into Saturday's game with Duke (7-5, 1-2 ACC). The Terrapins' conference wins have come against then-No. 11 Boston College (2-0), then-No. 5 Wake Forest (3-2) and then-No. 19 Virginia (4-0), as Maryland has held six opponents scoreless on the season, including two conference foes. The Terps hold a 253-100 advantage in shots on the year and have out-scored their opponents 48-8. Maryland has notched 93 penalty corners to the opposition's 44, while its opponents hold a 107-46 advantage in saves.
In 2006, the Terps won their second consecutive NCAA Championship with a 1-0 triumph over Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C. Duke handed Maryland one of its two losses of the year as the Terrapins finished the season with a record of 23-2 (4-1ACC). In 2007, Maryland returns 13 letterwinners including eight starters from its 2006 championship squad.
Series History: Maryland leads the all-time series with Duke, 22-7-3. The Blue Devils handed the then-top-ranked Terps their first loss of the season in 2006 with a 2-0 victory in College Park, Md., on Oct. 7. Before the shut-out loss, Maryland had not been held scoreless since the 2004 NCAA semifinals.
Last Time Out: Duke secured two victories on the road last weekend, including its first win over an ACC foe, as the Blue Devils defeated No. 10 Boston College (3-2) and No. 14 Boston University (3-2 OT) in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
Versus the Eagles, freshman Susan Ferger netted Duke's first goal and junior Marian Dickinson later added two tallies as the Blue Devils came away with a 3-2 victory. Freshman Sarah Schoffstall was credited with an assist in the game, while senior goalie Caitlin Williams made five saves on the day.
Against the Terriers, senior Shayna McGeehan got the Blue Devils on the board and Dickinson again netted two goals, including the game-winner five minutes into overtime, to give Duke a 3-2 win. Sophomore Lauren Miller tallied two assists in the contest and Williams was credited with a season-high 11 saves, including eight stops in the second half.
DUFH News & Notes: Junior Marian Dickinson was named ACC Field Hockey Player of the Week on Oct. 2 for her efforts at BC and BU ... senior goalie Caitlin Williams ranks first in the ACC in saves (72), third in save percentage (..783) and fourth in goals against average (1.66) ... she ranks 18th nationally in save percentage .... junior Ashley Pultorak will see a familiar face on the field today in Maryland defender Ellen Ott, as the two hail from Schwenksville, Pa., and have played together since seventh grade ... Duke holds a 179-153 shot advantage over its opponents on the season, and has also tallied 94 penalty corners to the opposition's 78 ... The Blue Devils have outscored their foes, 25-20, and their opponents hold a narrow 74-72 advantage in saves for the year ... Duke is led by tri-captains, seniors Courtney Elliott and Caitlin Williams, and junior Laura Suchoski ... head coach Beth Bozman is in her fifth season at Duke, as she holds a record of 78-25 at the school and has guided the Blue Devils to four straight Final Four appearances.
A Look Ahead: Duke will next head to Norfolk, Va., to take on Longwood (Oct. 13) and Old Dominion (Oct. 14). After hitting the road for two contests in Newark, Del., the following weekend, the Blue Devils will close out the regular season and face their final conference opponent on Oct. 27 at Virginia.
Duke in the Rankings: The Blue Devils currently rank 12th in the STX/NFHCA Poll, released on Oct. 2. Archrival North Carolina (12-0) took the top spot for the fourth straight week, as Maryland (12-0) ranks second and Connecticut (11-1) ranks third. Wake Forest (6-4) sits at No. 4, while Iowa (9-2) is listed at No. 5. All six ACC schools are ranked in the top 20, as Boston College (8-3) remains at No. 10 and Virginia (5-5) comes in at No. 19.
