DURHAM, N.C. - The 11th-ranked Duke field hockey team will begin postseason play on Thursday in Newton, Mass., as the Blue Devils take on third-ranked Wake Forest in the opening round of the 2007 ACC Field Hockey Championship, hosted by Boston College.
Duke finished the regular season with an overall record of 11-7 (1-4 ACC) and was part of a three-way tie for fourth place in the conference. The Blue Devils are seeded sixth for the championship, while Wake Forest (12-4, 3-2 ACC) is the league's third-seed. The two squads will square off for the second time in 2007 in Thursday afternoon's second quarterfinal contest, which is set for 4 p.m. at Newton Campus Turf Field.
Scouting the Demon Deacons: Duke and Wake Forest will meet for the second time this season in the opening round of the ACC Tournament. The Demon Deacons are led by Michelle Kasold, who is tops on the squad in points (24) and assists (10), Chelsea Cipriani, who has scored a team-high nine goals,and Liz Fries, who has netted four game-winning goals on the year. Goalie Crystal Duffield has recorded 43 saves across 13 games for Wake Forest for a 3.31 saves per game average, a mark that ranks third in the ACC.
Wake Forest is the defending ACC Tournament Champion, as the Demon Deacons outlasted Maryland, 1-0, in the 2006 finals in Winston-Salem, N.C., to claim the title.
Duke/Wake Forest - The Last Meeting: In the first meeting between the Blue Devils and the Demon Deacons in 2007, Wake Forest notched a 4-2 win in Durham, N.C., (Sept. 8). Emily Cummings, Melissa Martin, Chelsea Cipriani and Liz Fries each netted goals for WFU, while Duke received tallies from junior Laura Suchoski and sophomore Amie Survilla. Deacon keeper Crystal Duffield and Blue Devil goalie senior Caitlin Williams each notched four saves on the day, as Duke out-shot Wake Forest, 18-12, and held an 11-3 advantage in penalty corners.
Duke leads the all-time series with Wake Forest, 34-22.
A Look At The 2007 ACC Field Hockey Championship: The 25th annual ACC Field Hockey Championship hosted by Boston College will take place from Nov. 1-4 at Newton Campus Turf Field. Quarterfinal game one will begin at 1 p.m. on Thursday and features fourth-seeded Boston College (12-7, 1-4) and fifth-seeded Virginia (10-8, 1-4 ACC). Sixth-seeded Duke (11-7, 1-4 ACC) will face third seed Wake Forest (12-4, 3-2 ACC) at 4 p.m. in quarterfinal game two. North Carolina (18-0, 5-0 ACC) enters the postseason as the ACC regular season champion and is seeded No. 1 for the league tournament. The Tar Heels will take on the winner of quarterfinal game one between Boston College and Virginia in the semifinals on Friday at 4 p.m. Defending national champion Maryland (17-1, 4-1 ACC), claimed the ACC's two-seed and will meet the winner of Thursday's contest between Wake Forest and Duke in a semifinal contest on Friday at 7 p.m. The 2007 ACC Field Hockey Championship game will take place at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
All five ACC tournament games will be available for viewing throughout the week. Thursday's and Friday's games will be webcast live on www.ACCSelect.com, while Sunday's league championship showdown will be televised regionally on FSN South, Comcast Sportsnet Mid-Atlantic and New England Sports Network. Last Time Out: Duke heads into ACC Tournament play following a 5-3 loss to Virginia in Charlottesville on Oct. 27.
The Cavaliers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on scores from Lauren Elstein and Traci Ragukas, both before the 11-minute mark. The Blue Devils then retaliated with a pair of goals of their own, as junior Marian Dickinson and sophomore Amie Survilla scored within 63 seconds of each other to tie the game at two apiece.
The second half saw UVA net two consecutive goals, but Duke answered once again as Survilla found the net for the second time on the day to pull the Blue Devils within one at 4-3.
Thirty seconds later, Ragukas put the Cavaliers up 5-3 with her second tally of the day and while the Blue Devils pressed and gained two more short corners, they could not convert and UVA came away with the win.
Virginia out-shot Duke, 18-14, and the Blue Devils held an 8-6 advantage in penalty corners for the game. Two goalkeepers combined for eight saves for the Cavaliers, while senior keeper Caitlin Williams notched five stops for Duke.
Duke in the Rankings: The Blue Devils currently rank 12th in the STX/NFHCA Division I National Poll, as was released on Oct. 30. Three fellow ACC teams occupy the top three spots in North Carolina (No. 1), Maryland (No. 2) and Wake Forest (No. 3), while Connecticut and Michigan come in at No. 4 and No. 5 respectively. Duke has faced 10 of the 20 current ranked teams this season, including four of five conference opponents as all six ACC squads have been ranked in every poll this season except for one (Oct. 23 - Virginia).
