DURHAM, N.C. - Seven Duke field hockey players were named to the 2007 Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-South Region squad on November 14, as was announced by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA). Senior Caitlin Williams, juniors Marian Dickinson and Laura Suchoski and sophomore Lauren Miller received first team recognition, while senior Shayna McGeehan, sophomore Brooke Patterson and freshman Susan Ferger were second team honorees.
The regional honor is the third of its kind for McGeehan and Suchoski, while Dickinson and Williams are recipients for the second time in their careers. The accolade is the first of its kind for Ferger, Miller and Patterson.
Duke's starting goalkeeper for the past two seasons, Williams secured an ACC-leading 121 saves in 2007 to go along with a save percentage of .738. The Greenland, N.H., native closed her career with 238 saves, a mark which ties for fifth on the Duke career charts, and has 15 shutouts to her credit over the course of her four years as a Blue Devil. Williams received All-ACC honors this year for her first career conference honor.
Dickinson has led the Blue Devils in goals and points for the past two seasons, as the midfielder has 41 goals and 108 points over 65 career games, marks that rank ninth and seventh, respectively, on the Blue Devil career charts. The Calgary, Alberta, native scored a team-high 15 goals and dished out nine assists in 2007 for a squad-leading 39 points. Dickinson received her first All-ACC citation this season.
A native of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., Suchoski closed out her junior campaign with six goals and eight assists for 20 points, a total which ranked third on the Blue Devil squad. Suchoski has started every game since she arrived at Duke (65) and has received All-ACC honors twice (2006, 2007), All-South Region accolades three times, All-America nods twice (2005, 2006) and NCAA All-Tournament Team recognition in 2006.
Miller dished out a team-leading 10 assists in 2007 and also netted four goals to tally 18 points for the campaign. The Cherry Hills Village, Colo., native has started every game since her arrival in Durham and is 13 helpers short of breaking into Duke's career assists charts with 13 assists over 42 contests.
While McGeehan has been most invaluable on the defensive end over her career, the Grantville, Pa., native was active in Duke's offensive scheme during her senior campaign, as she recorded four goals - two of which were game-winners - after scoring just once in the previous three years combined. McGeehan also notched three defensive saves in 2007. The defender was named to the All-ACC Tournament squad after a one-goal, one-defensive stop performance in Duke's first round contest.
Patterson was also valuable on defense in 2007, recording three defensive saves of her own. The Emmaus, Pa., native dished out seven assists over her sophomore campaign to build upon a 10-helper season performance in 2006. Patterson is just nine assists short of a tie for ninth place on Duke's career charts with 17 through two seasons of competition.
In her first collegiate season, Ferger netted five goals and added two assists for 12 points. The Columbus, Ohio, native was the only freshman in Duke's starting lineup for all 20 games in 2007.
The 2007 Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-America teams will be released on Monday, November 19.
Duke ended its 2007 campaign on Saturday, Nov. 10, with a narrow 5-4 NCAA Tournament loss to seventh-ranked James Madison in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Blue Devils compiled an overall record of 11-9 (1-4 ACC) and currently hold a national ranking of No. 12.
