Coach Joanne P. McCallie
On the game as a whole:
“I was really happy with the team and the intensity that they had for the entire 40 minutes. It's so important to get better and take advantage of the opportunity to play and play hard. It was great to see Krystal [Thomas] lead us in rebounding, Brittany [Mitch] have the kind of game she had with seven steals, and Emily [Waner] lead us with seven assists. Twenty-two offensive rebounds was significant, but we still turned the ball over too many times. The 28 steals was a nice direction to move in, you can't always steal the ball that much, but I thought the team was hungry and we're excited to take it from here.”
On her first game in Cameron Indoor Stadium:
“It's a great atmosphere. I loved the crowd and its enthusiasm. It didn't really feel like a first game because of the exhibitions, I know that they were exhibitions, but it just feels natural and exciting.”
On getting the ball into the post:
“It is a big emphasis to get the ball into the post. We have a great deal of confidence in our four women playing down low and we tend to get annoyed when the ball doesn't get into the post because good things happen. Whether they score or move it, we just need to play from the inside out.”
On playing against the zone:
“I think people were ready to step up and take good shots but the key is to move the ball and make sure that it goes inside first. You have to pop a zone from the inside out. There was some concentration to get the ball inside and move it around a bit. Also, we haven't played against too many zones. More people are going to be playing us with a zone so I thought it was good for us to work on. That's what the players were doing; working out how to deal with the zone.”
Chante Black
On being healthy this year:
“Well first off I have to continue getting into shape so I guess the aggression comes from just moving and knowing that I have to attack at all times. The minutes that I'm playing, I just know that I need to dominate during those minutes. I'm just being more aggressive and training on attacking at all times.”
On having Krystal Thomas on the court with her at the same time:
“It's great. Of course when you have two 6'5” towers it's going to intimidate anybody we play against. Krystal is a great post player. I can throw it up there and she'll catch it. She has great hands and runs the floor well. I think she enjoys playing with me as well.”
On the team's depth:
You're definitely going out there to attack knowing that you can use all your energy and someone is going to replace you with the same energy. That's what we were doing the last half of the game. I think we wore down their post players and we were able to get fast breaks since they were worn down.”
Krystal Thomas
On playing with Chante Black:
“Chante brings experience, she knows what gaps to find, what passes are there and she's just a great player to play with.”
On her performance today:
“Well on the 20 points part, being a freshman is just about learning and each game is about taking a step and getting better and better and as the season goes on just learning and understanding the game more at this higher intensity level. I was just focusing on working hard and in the first half attacking the glass knowing the goal is to get 20 rebounds. It's about the opponents to come; it's not so much about what we did tonight. It's about applying that to the greater games and the greater opponents.”
On her first game in Cameron Indoor Stadium:
“It was great. It was the first true home game with all the fans and all your supporters behind you cheering for you the whole time and that just added to our intensity and our hustle.”
Carrem Gay
On the difference in defensive intensity:
“I think we definitely brought it today. We've been working on effort and intensity and I think I had my teammates supporting me in terms of everyone else hustling and diving on the floor and getting loose balls. It's something that we've been working on in practice.”
