CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - After a season-best setting day two of action at the 2007 ACC Championships, held at the University of North Carolina's Koury Natatorium, the Duke women's swimming team sits in 10th place.
Senior Michelle Aristeo and freshman Jackie Fasano notched top-24 finishes in the 500 freestyle preliminaries, and went on to compete in the bonus finals, as Aristeo touched in 5:00.09 and Fasano finished in 5:00.12. Aristeo's time is a Duke season-best and a new personal-best for the senior, while Fasano's time ranks second-best.
Freshman Shannon Beall and junior Danielle Spearman were in action in the 200 individual medley bonus finals following prelims, as the two touched at the same time for Duke season-bests of 2:05.83.
On the 1-meter board, freshman Julie Brummond notched a score of 231.10 in preliminaries, missing the finals by six places in her first-ever ACC Championships.
Also notching a Duke season-best time, was the 200 freestyle relay team of Spearman, sophomore Emily Kelly, senior Leslie Hartford and Beall, as the foursome touched in 1:36.50 in finals action. Spearman recorded a 24.12 leadoff split to set a new personal-best for the 50 free event, also setting yet another Duke season-best.
In men's diving action, sophomore Nick Campisano missed the finals by three spots, as he notched a score of 304.70 in preliminaries.
Duke finished the night with 54 points, and heads into day two of championship action in 10th place. Host North Carolina is currently in first place with 262 points, while Florida State (200) and Virginia (198) round out the top three.
Tomorrow's events will begin at 11 a.m. with the 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke preliminaries. At 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., men's 1-meter diving prelims and women's 3-meter diving prelims will commence, and 7 p.m. will see the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, 3-meter board and 400 medley relay finals get under way.
The 2007 ACC Women's Swimming Championships will continue through Saturday, Feb. 17, with preliminaries beginning at 11 a.m. each day and finals set to begin at 7 p.m. each evening. The 2007 Platform Diving Championships will be held on Saturday, Feb. 17, at Duke's Taishoff Aquatic Pavilion at 10 a.m.
The 2007 ACC Men's Swimming Championships will be held Feb. 21-24 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
