GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The 11th-ranked Duke women's tennis team fell to fourth-ranked Florida, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex. The Blue Devils fall to 3-2 (1-0 ACC), while the Gators remain unbeaten at 8-0 (0-0 SEC).
Florida clinched the doubles point with two straight victories at No. 2 and No. 3, as the Duke duo of freshman Elizabeth Plotkin and sophomore Jessi Robinson fell to 39th-ranked Megan Alexander and Diana Srebrovic (8-3) and freshman Amanda Granson and senior Tory Zawacki fell to Csilla Borsanyi and Anastasia Revzina (8-4).
The Blue Devil duo of Daniela Bercek and sophomore Melissa Mang improved to 4-0 on the season with a win at No. 1 over 20th-ranked Whitney Benik and Nina Suvak (8-6). Bercek and Mang are 3-0 at the No. 1 position, and 1-0 when playing at No. 2.
Singles action saw Mang post her fourth-straight victory, as she defeated 24th-ranked Alexander at the No. 2 spot, 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (10-4). Mang is 4-1 on the season, with all four wins coming at the No. 2 position.
“Melissa has been playing well the past few weeks and the more matches she plays, the better she gets,” said Duke head coach Jamie Ashworth. “She had that same pattern going a year ago and she has done a really good job for us. Mentally, that was a big win for her since she hadn't been [Megan Alexander] in a few previous times. She was really pleased with being able to come out on top.”
Florida rallied to post five straight singles victories to come away with the 6-1 win.
“Florida was mentally tougher than we were today," said Ashworth. "We had opportunities in a few matches and in doubles, and when it came down to big points, they played them better than we did. That's something we have to improve on.”
Duke returns home to host No. 22 Arizona State on March 4. First serve is set for 12 p.m. at Ambler Stadium.
