The Blue Devil men's golf team finished in 12th place at the Puerto Rico Classic on Tuesday. Duke fired a final round total of 303 for a three-day total of 884, 20 over par.
Junior Michael Schachner paced Duke with his final round 71, one under on the day. The Libertyville, Illinois native made birdie on holes 1, 6, 8, 11, and 15 on Tuesday. His three round total of two-under 214 put him in a tie for 12th overall in the individual race. Schachner made 13 birdies at the event, tying him for 10th in birdies made.
Senior Jake Grodzinsky shot a 74 on the par 72 Rio Mar Country Club River Course and tied for 27th with his score of 218, two over par.
Freshman Adam Long fired a six over 78. Long made the turn even par on the day, but three straight bogeys on holes three through five and a triple on eight finished his day. Long tied for 50th with a total of 223.
Sophomore Clark Klaasen struggled to a final round 80, seeing his round turn on the par four 16th when his wedge from 135 sailed out of the rough and into a hazard over the green, forcing him to make double. Klaasen finished tied for 73rd at 229. Freshman Jeff Edelman closed with an 81 for a three-day total of 239.
Georgia won the team title with a final round of 294 for a 14 under par total of 850. Clemson and Stanford tied for second one shot back at 851. Alabama was fourth (855), East Tennessee State placed fifth (856), Oklahoma State sixth (862), Minnesota seventh (864), while Georgia Tech (eighth-865), Florida (ninth-867) and Virginia Tech (10th-878) closed out the top 10. Texas topped Duke by two shots at 882 for 11th.
Georgia Tech's Roberto Castro and Stanford's Joseph Bramlett tied for the individual title at seven-under 209. Oklahoma State's Jonathan Moore, the defending NCAA champio, and East Tennesee State's Rhys Davies tied for second one shot back.
"We played well at times and struck the ball well," said interim head coach Brad Sparling. "We need to go back and really work on improving our course management and short game. The golf course and wind presented us with many challenges. Even though we could not match our first day score (four-under 284), we made some strides as an overall team."
The Blue Devils return to action March 11-13th at the General Jim Hackler Invitational at the TPC Myrtle Beach course.
