DURHAM, N.C. ? Freshman Adam Long fired an even-par 71 on Sunday to lead the Duke men's golf team to an eighth place tie after one round at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate on Sunday. The Blue Devils, ranked 20th in the Golf World/Nike Golf Division I Coaches' Poll, shot a four-over 288 and will enter the second round of play on Monday tied with LSU.
Central Florida shot a 14-under 270 in the opening round to take a four stroke lead over Florida State. Baylor and Wake Forest are tied for third at one-under, while Coastal Carolina is fifth with a one-over 285. Augusta State shot a two-over 286 to sit in sixth with North Carolina seventh overall at three-over (287). South Carolina sits in 10th, one shot behind Duke and LSU, with a five-over 289.
Long opened up play with four straight pars before suffering back-to-back bogeys on No. 5 and No. 6 at the par-71, 7,261 yard Bulls Bay Golf Club. He recovered to par the final three holes of the front side to make the turn at two-over (38). The St. Louis, Mo., native birdied the par-5 10th hole and followed up pars on No. 11 and No. 12 with birdies on the par-5 13th and par-3 14th holes to get to one-under on the day. A bogey on No. 15 dropped Long back to even par but he carded his fourth birdie of the back nine on the next hole. After a par on No. 17, Long closed with a bogey on No. 18 that put him in a tie for 19th after one round.
Junior Michael Schachner rebounded from a slow start that included bogeys on his first two holes to shoot a one-over 72 on the day. He slipped to three-over with a bogey No. 7 before turning things around with a birdie on the par-4 eighth hole. After making the turn at two-over, Schachner birdies No. 10 and parred No. 11 before suffering a double-bogey on the par-3 12th hole. The Libertyville, Ill., native recovered with four pars and birdies on No. 13 and No. 16 to wrap up the day tied for 28th.
Freshman Jeff Edelman also fired a one-over 72 to tie for 28th after one round. He carded six pars, two birdies and a bogey on the front nine to make the turn at one-under (35). On the back nine, Edelman suffered a bogey on No. 10 but followed that up with two pars and an eagle on the par-5 13th to get to two-under on the round. After a bogey on No. 14, he parred three straight holes before dropping two strokes with a double-bogey on the par-4 18th hole.
Jake Grodzinsky is tied for 40th after posting a two-over 73 in round one. He finished the day with a team-high 14 pars to go along with one birdie and three bogeys. Sophomore Clark Klaasen birdies his second hole of the day but then carded bogeys on four of the next five holes to dip to three-over through seven. From that point on the Grand Rapids, Mich. native played even-par golf and finished the day tied for 45th.
The Blue Devils open up second round play on Monday at 10 a.m. on the front side of the Bulls Bay Golf Club. Duke will be paired with North Carolina and LSU in second round action.
