AWENDAW, S.C. ? Freshman Adam Long carded five birdies and an eagle en route to six-under 65 in the closing round of the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate on Tuesday. As a team, Duke fired a three-under 281 to finish sixth overall with a three-round total of 860 (+8). Long and Augusta State's Wallace Booth tied for low round on the day with six-under 65s.
Wake Forest and Baylor shared the team title at 12-under (840), while Booth captured the individual crown with an eight-under 205. Florida State finished third at seven-under (845) with Central Florida (846) and Augusta State (855) rounding out the top five.
Long got off to a quick start in the final round, posting birdies three of the first five holes. He also birdied the par-4 seventh hole, before recording his only bogey of the day on the eighth hole. Following a par on the final hole of front side, Long made the turn at three-under (33). The St. Louis, Mo., native quickly moved to five-under with an eagle on No. 10 and closed with seven pars and a birdie over the remaining eight holes. Long's 65 was a career-low for the freshman and also tied for the second lowest 18-hole score at Duke since the 1985-86 season. Long finished the event with a one-under 212 to finish tied for 13th. He has now finished in the top 25 in five of the six tournaments he has competed in.
Junior Michael Schachner fired a closing round 71 to finish tied for 42nd overall. Schachner birdied three of the first six holes and shot a two-under 34 on the front nine. He also birdied the par-4 11th hole before suffering bogeys on No. 13, No. 14 and No. 17 to slide back to even-par. Jake Grodzinsky recorded 17 pars and a bogey en route to a final round 72 on Tuesday. The Cornville, Ariz., native finished tied for 26th with a two-over 215 (73-70-72).
Clark Klaasen had a pair of birdies and shot a two-over 73 in the final round. He finished tied for 47th with an eight-over 221 for the event. Freshman Jeff Edelman suffered a pair of double-bogeys on the front nine and made the turn at four-over (40). After a bogey on No. 11, he finished with five pars and birdies on No. 16 and No. 18 to finish with a three-over 74. Edelman placed tied for 31st with a four-over 217.
Duke returns to action April 1-3 when it travels to Tucson, Ariz., to compete in the National Invitational Tournament.
