CLEMSON, S.C. - The No. 20 Blue Devil women's tennis team fell to eighth-ranked Clemson by a narrow 4-3 margin on Saturday afternoon at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center. Duke falls to 9-4 (4-1 ACC) with the loss, while the Tigers improve to 14-3 (5-1 ACC).
The Tigers scored their first point of the afternoon by sweeping all three doubles matches. The 27th-ranked Duke duo of senior Daniela Bercek and sophomore Melissa Mang were defeated for the first time this season, as the seventh-ranked tandem of Ani Mijacika and Federica van Adrichem came away with the win at the No. 1 spot, 8-6.
The Clemson tandem of Estefania Balda and Ina Hadziselimovic then won an 8-4 decision over sophomore Jessi Robinson and freshman Amanda Granson at flight two, while Maria Brito and Carol Salge withstood a late rally by the Blue Devil tandem of freshman Elizabeth Plotkin and senior Kristin Cargill to record the 8-6 victory at No. 3.
The Blue Devils tied the match score at one apiece as senior Tory Zawacki defeated Brito, 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 5 singles spot, but the Tiger lead grew to 3-1 after 64th-ranked Mijacika defeated 59th-ranked Mang (6-3, 6-2) at No. 3 and 67th-ranked Salge posted a straight-set victory over No. 106 Plotkin at No. 3 (6-3, 6-4).
Hadziselimovic then clinched the win for Clemson with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over senior Clelia Deltour at the No. 6 position.
In the final two matches of the afternoon, 52nd-ranked Bercek defeated 85th-ranked Balda in a three-set battle at the top singles slot, 6-4, 1-6, 6-1, while Granson defeated van Adrichem, 7-6(4), 5-7, 10-7, to put the final score at 4-3 in favor of the the Tigers.
The Blue Devils will face seventh-ranked Georgia Tech on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Atlanta.
