HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. ? Junior Michael Schachner fired a two-under 70 on Saturday to help lead Duke to an even-par 288 in the final round of the Courtyard by Marriott Intercollegiate at Devils Ridge Golf Club (par-72, 6,854 yards). The Blue Devils finished third overall with a three-round score of two-under 862 (289-285-288).
Charlotte shot a four-under 284 in the final round to win the Intercollegiate with a 12-under 852. Tulsa shot even-par on Saturday and finished two shots back with a 10-under 854. Duke finished third at two-under while Vanderbilt and Georgia Southern tied for fourth at six-over (870).
Schachner's final round 70 gave him a three-round total of 212 (-4). The Libertyville, Ill., native finished tied for fifth overall, his second top 5 showing of the year. Freshman Adam Long fired a one-under 71 in the closing round for his seventh under-par round of the season. Long finished tied for 44th with an +8 223 (75-77-71).
Senior Jake Grodzinsky and sophomore Clark Klaasen tied for 20th overall at two-over (218). Grodzinsky fired a 74 in the closing round, while Klaasen shot a 73 on Saturday.
After two solid rounds on Friday, junior Michael Quagliano shot a six-over 78 in the final round to slip into a tie for 30th at five-over (221). He entered the closing round at one-under after shooting 72-71 in the opening two rounds.
Freshman Jeff Edelman, playing as an individual, capped off his tournament with a three-over 75. On the strength of his opening round 65 (-7), the Southlake, Texas, native placed tied for ninth at one-under 215 (65-75-75). The tie for ninth is Edelman's top finish of the season.
Duke returns to action next weekend at the ACC Championships (April 20-22) held at Old North State Club in Baden Lake, N.C.
