TUCSON, ARIZ. ? The Duke men's golf team shot a 283-300=583 (+7) on Monday in the opening two rounds of the 2007 National Invitational Tournament at the Omni Tucson National Golf Club. The Blue Devils enter Tuesday's final round action 10th overall.
Duke shot an impressive five-under 283 in the opening round as freshman Adam Long led the way with a three-under 69. Long's opening round featured four birdies and an eagle. Fellow freshman Jeff Edelman was also under par in the first round with a two-under 70.
Sophomore Clark Klaasen carded three birdies and three pars over the final six holes of play to close with an even-par 72 in his opening round, while junior Michael Schachner recorded 12 pars, three birdies and three bogeys en route to a first round 72. Senior Jake Grodzinsky closed his opening round with a five-over 77.
The Blue Devils never got on track in the second round shooting a 12-over 300. Grodzinsky recorded a team-high seven birdies but also had a pair of double-bogeys and five bogeys while shooting a two-over 74. Schachner and Edelman fired a three-over 75s in the second round, while Klaasen and Long each shot 76s.
Long and Edelman are tied for 24th overall at one-over (145), while Schachner is tied for 41st at three-over (147). Klaasen is tied for 47th overall at +4 (148) and Grodzinsky is tied for 67th at seven-over (151).
The 2007 National Invitational Tournament is a 54-hole event, which will be played at Omni Tucson National, a par 72, 7,094-yard layout. Final round action begins on Tuesday, April 3 at 7:30 a.m. PDT.
Tulsa leads the tournament with a 12-under 564 with Arizona State two shots back. Texas A&M is five shots off the pace at seven-under. Tulsa's Ryan Henry is the individual leader at eight-under after shooting matching 68s in the first two rounds.
Live tournament scoring will be available at www.golfstat.com. The National Invitational Tournament is Duke's first competition since the passing of longtime head coach Rod Myers. Myers passed away late in the evening on Friday, March 30.
