The Duke Football Family took time this weekend to mourn the loss of George Thomas "Tom" Davis, who passed away on Friday, April 20. Following the Spring Game, head coach Ted Roof began his final remarks of the spring by reinforcing to the Blue Devil squad the values that Tom stood for while stressing the important role that family plays in our lives. Immediately thereafter, the Duke public address announcer led the fans in attendance at Wallace Wade in a moment of silence to honor Tom Davis.
“With everything going on right now, I felt it was important to respect and remember all of the wonderful people who came before us that have made Duke football what it is. Tom will always be remembered as one of Duke's all-time greats, both on and off the gridiron,” noted Roof.
An All-Southern Conference player from 1941-1943, Tom played on the 1941 Rose Bowl and 1942 Sugar Bowl teams. He was inducted into the Duke Sports Hall of Fame in 1986 and the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 1988. In addition to Tom's years of service to the Duke football team, Tom's brothers also played for Duke. In fact, with 12 consecutive years of dedication, the Davis family was a fixture on the Duke gridiron during the 1940's and early 1950's.
