TUCSON, ARIZ. ? The Duke men's golf team shot a one-under 287 in the closing round of the 2007 National Invitational Tournament at the Omni Tucson National Golf Club on Tuesday to finish ninth overall with an overall score of six-over 870 (283-300-287).
Senior Jake Grodzinsky carded Duke's best round of the day with a three-under 69. The Cornville, Ariz., native opened with a birdie on No. 10 (Duke began play on the back nine) before slipping to one-over after back-to-back bogeys on No. 13 and No. 14. After making the turn at one-over, Grodzinsky birdied four of the final eight holes to shoot a 32 on the front side of the course and finish with the three-under 69. He finished tied for 43rd overall with a four-over 220.
Sophomore Clark Klaasen collected five birdies and 10 pars en route to firing a two-under 70 in the final round. The Grand Rapids, Mich., native was Duke's top finisher, tied for 29th overall, with a two-over 218 in the 54-hole tournament.
Freshmen Adam Long and Jeff Edelman shot matching 74s in the closing round to finish tied for 34th at 219 (+3). Long's round included two birdies and an eagle, while Edelman had four birdies on the day. Michael Schachner also shot a two-over 74 on Tuesday and finished tied for 48th with a five-over 221. The Libertyville, Ill., native was at five-over on the day through 14 holes before carding birdies on three of the final four holes to get back to two-over.
The National Invitational Tournament is Duke's first competition since the passing of longtime head coach Rod Myers. Myers passed away late in the evening on Friday, March 30.
