DURHAM, N.C.-- The second-ranked Duke women's golf team received its 15th consecutive bid to participate in NCAA Regional action on Monday as the Blue Devils were seeded No. 1 in the East Region and will next travel to Baton Rouge, La., from May 10-12 to play for a bid to the NCAA Championship.
The Blue Devils make their return to the East Regional in 2007 after being shipped to the Central Region last year for the first time in school history. Duke has claimed East Region titles six occasions (1996, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004).
“We were ready to go to anywhere the NCAA committee wanted us to go,” said Duke Head Coach Dan Brooks. “It will definitely be in our favor to be on a golf course we have already been on and performed well on. We also like the fact that we should be able to get Anna [Grzebien] back to graduation on May 13 as it should be easier getting her back from Baton Rouge rather than somewhere else.”
Other teams competing in the East Region are UCLA, Auburn, Purdue, Texas A&M, North Carolina, Alabama, Wake Forest, South Carolina, Virginia, Florida State, LSU, Louisville, South Florida, N.C. State, Birmingham-Southern, Furman, College of Charleston, Western Carolina, Jacksonville State and Jackson State (all teams are listed in seed order from 2-21). Three individuals also received invitations to the NCAA East Regional-- Araceli Felgueroso (Coastal Carolina), Lene Krog (East Carolina) and Amanda Mathis (Mississippi State).
The regional will be a three-day, 54-hole tournament with 18 holes played each day at the University Club Golf Course in Baton Rouge, La. The top eight teams and top two individuals (not on one of those eight teams) advance on to the NCAA Championships to be played May 22-25 at the LPGA International Legends Golf Course in Daytona Beach, Calif.
Duke is coming off winning its 12th consecutive ACC Championship in Charlotte, N.C., and have won five of its nine tournaments this season. Duke is led by five golfers ranked in the top 50 of the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index, including the nations top-ranked golfer, Amanda Blumenherst. Other Blue Devils ranked include sophomore Jennie Lee (7), senior Anna Grzebien (29), junior Jennifer Pandolfi (47) and freshman Alison Whitaker (50).
Earlier this season, Duke picked up a six-stroke victory at the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic as the Blue Devils registered a 54-hole total of 872. Rounding out the top-five was Vanderbilt (878), Auburn (879), Tennessee (892) and University of South Alabama (899). For the Blue Devils, Blumenherst won the individual title with a nine-under-par, 207, as she collected rounds of 68, 68 and 70. Lee finished tied for 19th, Grzebien and Whitaker were tied for 21st and Pandolfi earned a tied for 43rd place finish.
In the spring, the Blue Devils have played their best golf winning three of five tournaments. Duke won the team titles at the UCF Challenge, LSU/Cleveland Classic and the ACC Championship. Blumenherst has won a total of four tournaments this season, including wins in four of five tournaments this spring.
