BROWNS SUMMITT, N.C. ? The windy and chilly weather conditions got the best of the top-ranked Duke Women's Golf Team this weekend at the Bryan National Collegiate as the Blue Devils turned in a 54-hole total of 898 to finish fourth at the 6,386-yard, Par 72 Bryan Park Champions Course in Browns Summitt, N.C.
Purdue took home the team title as the Boilermakers posted a 294 on Sunday to finish with a three-day total of 887, while Florida (894), North Carolina (897), Duke (898), Tennessee (903), Georgia (908), Auburn (916), South Carolina (917), Ohio State (920) and Virginia (923) rounding out the top 10. Duke's round of 305 on Sunday was the second-worst of the season.
“It seemed like we didn't get into a flow as a team this weekend,” said Duke Head Coach Dan Brooks. “We never got any putts to fall for us and it was just not our tournament. We are not worried as you cannot always be on top.”
After moving into a tie for the lead after round two, Blue Devil sophomore Amanda Blumenherst carded a 75 on the final day to finish with a three-day total of 219 to finish tied for sixth. For the second straight day, Blumenherst struggled on holes two through four with two bogies and a triple-bogey, but came back to play the next nine holes at three-under-par. She closed with a bogey and four straight pars to shoot a 75. The sixth place finish broke a school record streak of three straight wins.
Taking home the individual title was Purdue's Maria Hernandez, who won on the third playoff hole with a three-day total of 215.
Duke senior Anna Grzebien closed with a 76 on Sunday to finish tied for ninth with a 223. She notched one birdie on the day, which came at the par-five 11th hole. Her ninth place finish was the best of the spring and was the second-best finish of the season.
“Anna game is about the most solid it has been all season,” said Brooks. “She didn't get any putts to fall late and it could have gone better for her.”
Jennifer Pandolfi notched her fifth top-20 finish of the year as she was tied for 20th with a 228. Pandolfi, who is from Navarre, Fla., registered her second straight round of 78 on Sunday as she totaled two birdies on the day. Jennie Lee notched a 76 on Sunday on her way to finishing tied for 24th with a 229.
Freshman Alison Whitaker had an 81 on the final day to finish tied for 47th.
Duke will next play in the ACC Championship next weekend at the Carmel Country Club in Charlotte, N.C. It will take place from April 13-15 and the Blue Devils have won the past 11 straight ACC titles.
“It is nice going into the ACC Championship with North Carolina playing well as they just nipped us this weekend,” said Brooks. “We want the ACC Championship to be good preparation for us for the rest of the season.”
