
Blue Devils Climb 10 Spots After Second Round Of NCAA Championships

WILLIAMSBURG, VA ? Senior Jake Grodzinsky, junior Michael Schachner and sophomore Clark Klaasen each fired one-under 69s on Thursday as Duke shot a two-under 278 as a team to climb 10 spots into a tie for 19th after two rounds of play at the 2007 NCAA Championship at the Gold Course at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club.
The Blue Devils, with a two-day total of 572 (+12), are tied with Lamar and North Carolina following the second day of play. The three teams begin third round action on Friday at noon on No. 1. Duke is just two shots out of 15th place with the top 15 teams advancing on to the final round on Saturday.
"Our guys played very well today. I am extremely happy with the way we responded after not scoring as well as we would have liked in the opening round," said interim head coach Brad Sparling. "We are in a good position, we like our third round starting time and we are looking forward to another strong round tomorrow."
Grodzinsky shot a three-under 32 on the front side with birdies on No. 3 and No. 5 and an eagle on the par 5 sixth hole. The Cornville, Ariz., native sank a 10-footer for eagle on No. 6 to move to three-under. Grodzinsky suffered a double-bogey on No. 10 and fell back to even-par with a bogey on No. 12. He rebounded with five straight pars before carding a birdie on the par 4 18th. Grodzinsky enters third round action tied for 76th with a four-over 144.
Schachner, a junior from Libertyville, Ill., trimmed 10 strokes from his opening round score and is tied for 120th with an eight-over 148. In the second round, Schachner posted a team-high five birdies with 10 pars, two bogeys and a double-bogey. He carded four birdies on the front nine but also had two bogey and a double to make the turn at even-par. Following three straight pars, Schachner birdied the par 4 13th hole before closing his round with five consecutive pars.
"I played much better today than in the opening round. My swing felt better and I putted the ball well on the greens," said Schachner. "We rebounded well as a team after the opening round and we are eager to get back out there tomorrow."
Klaasen opened with a bogey on Thursday but recovered to get to two-under through seven holes with birdies on No. 4, No. 5 and No. 7. He sank an 18-footer for birdie on four and followed that with a 15-foot birdie putt on No. 5, before knocking his tee shot on the par-3 seventh hole inside of 10 feet. The Grand Rapids, Mich., native bogeyed No. 8 and N0. 9 to shoot an even-par 35 on the front side. Klaasen made a nice recovery for par on No. 10 after an errant tee shot and added five more pars before sticking his tee shot inside of 10 feet on the par 3 16th hole. He made the birdie putt and finished par, par for his 10th under-par round of the year. Klaasen is tied for 58th overall with a three-over 143.
Freshman Adam Long also had a nice day for the Blue Devils shooting a one-over 71 for the second straight day. The St. Louis, Mo., native is tied for 44th with a two-over 142. Long suffered a double-bogey on No. 2 but recovered with birdies on No. 5 and No. 7 to get back to even-par. He bogeyed the par 3 13th but made a tricky 15-foot birdie putt on No. 15 to get back to even before carding a bogey on the final hole for a 71.
Junior Michael Quagliano got off to a slow start in the second round and closed the day with a 77. He is tied for 139th with an 11-over 151. Despite his struggles on the day two, Quagliano nearly had the shot of the day on the par 5 sixth hole. Following a drive close to 350 yards, the Ardsley, N.Y., native knocked a nine-iron that landed just past the hole and spun back, settling two feet from the flagstick. He tapped in for eagle to help the Blue Devils play the par 5 sixth hole at five-under.
Stanford holds a one-shot lead over Minnesota after two rounds of play. After shooting five-under 275 on Day 1, the Cardinal followed with a two-under 278 for a two-day total of seven-under 553. The Golden Gophers shot four-under 276 on Thursday to climb within one of the lead at six-under 554. Coastal Carolina is in third place at two-under 558 after a second round of one-over 281. East Tennessee State shot even-par 280 for the second consecutive day for a total of even-par 560.
Senior Bronson LaCassie leads the individual standings at eight-under 132 after shooting five-under 65 on Thursday. Sophomore Jon Curran is two strokes behind at six-under 134 after shooting six-under 64. There is a four-way tie for fourth at five-under 135: first-round leader junior Rob Grube of Stanford (64-71), senior Dustin Johnson of Coastal Carolina (67-68), sophomore Zach Sucher of UAB (68-67) and sophomore Cameron Tringale of Georgia Tech (67-68).
