TERRE HAUTE, Ind. ? Duke sophomore Bo Waggoner finished right in the middle of the pack in a field of the country's best cross country runners Monday afternoon, taking 135th of 252 harriers at the 2008 NCAA Cross Country Championships hosted by Indiana State University.
Waggoner covered the challenging 10K course at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center in 31:09.3.
“Bo turned in a solid effort today, especially for a sophomore,” said Director of Track & Field and head men's cross country coach Norm Ogilvie. “Bo's experience at this race should pay big dividends next year, when he's hopefully leading the entire Duke team at the NCAA Championships.”
Waggoner weathered cold and windy conditions at race time, after it rained for 10 hours straight and tapered into a drizzle by the time the gun went off. He turned in even splits throughout the 6.2-mile race, coming through 3K in 8:59, 5K in 15:22, and 8K in 24:51.
His performance in Terre Haute, Ind., marks his first trip to the national race, while he was Duke's first representative there since Nick Schneider in 2004. Waggoner advanced to nationals as an automatic individual qualifier with a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Southeast Region meet. There, his 10K time of 30:43 was good for 11th overall in the field of 29 teams.
Oregon won the team championship with 48 total points, as they also saw the top individual finisher in Olympian Galen Rupp, who covered the course in 29:03 to lead the field. Behind Oregon, Iona took second (147), Stanford was third (227), Wisconsin fourth (229), and Auburn fifth (264) to round out the top five.
Among ACC finishers, Virginia took 14th, N.C. State 21st, and Florida State 26th. Duke's Southeast Region rival William & Mary finished 16th.
Today's race concludes the cross country season for the Blue Devils, who open the indoor track & field season in a four-team meet against North Carolina, N.C. State, and Virginia in Chapel Hill on Jan. 10.
