DURHAM, N.C. ? Duke University women's basketball seniors Carrem Gay and Abby Waner will make a live appearance on the 850 The Buzz morning radio show on Friday, Nov. 7, which is hosted by Adam Gold and Joe Ovies. The Blue Devil duo will be live in the studio from 9:00 - 10:00 a.m.
Gay, a product of New York, N.Y., has started 45 of 95 career games played since arriving in Durham in 2005-06. She is coming off averaging 6.6 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.6 steals as she started 11 of 35 contests. Waner, who is from Highlands Ranch, Colo., started all 31 of her games played in 2007-08, while averaging 10.3 points, 3.8 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 2.6 steals. She led Duke with 49 three-pointers made, 117 assists and 80 steals. Waner is a preseason Wade Trophy candidate for National Player of the Year.
Duke has been preseason ranked No. 8 in both the ESPN/USA Today Division I Coaches poll and the Associated Press listing. In the other preseason rankings, the Blue Devils have been tabbed fifth by Athlon Magazine, sixth in the Slam Magazine, sixth by GBallmag.com and seventh by Lindy's Magazine polls.
The Blue Devils return four starters from last year -- senior Chante Black, Waner, sophomore Jasmine Thomas and junior Joy Cheek. A total of nine letterwinners return including Gay, junior Bridgette Mitchell, junior Keturah Jackson, sophomore Karima Christmas and sophomore Krystal Thomas. Joanne P. McCallie, who enters her second year with the Duke program, also welcomes the fifth-best recruiting class in the nation with Chelsea Hopkins, Kathleen Scheer and Shay Selby.
As a team, Duke registered a 25-10 overall record and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2007-08 before falling, 77-63, to eighth-ranked Texas A&M. The Blue Devils were ranked in the top 20 the entire season to go along with the top 13 nationally in 18 weeks. Duke made its 11th consecutive NCAA Regional appearance, which is currently the third-best streak in the nation.
Duke features a very challenging slate in 2008-09 and will host Anderson University in an exhibition contest on Thursday, Nov. 6 at 7:00 p.m., before opening the season at home versus 14th-ranked Oklahoma State on Nov. 14 at 7:00 p.m. Duke will have a total of 14 home contests this season and will be on television 12 times in the regular season. The Anderson University contest will be free admission to the public.
