GAINESVILLE, FLA -- Senior Michael Schachner fired a three-under 67 in the final round of the SunTrust Gator Invitational on Sunday to earn a share of the individual tournament title with a seven-under 203 in the 54-hole event. As a team, Duke shot a three-over 283 in the final round to finish tied for sixth overall.
Florida won the team title at their home event for the 22 times in 32 years with a 20-under 820. Florida State finished second (12 shots back), while Mississippi State (842), UAB (844) and South Alabama (851) rounded out the top five. Duke, Wake Forest and LSU tied for sixth at +13 (853). Schachner shared the individual title with Zach Sucher of UAB, while Florida's Tyson Alexander was one shot back at six-under.
Opening up on the back nine, Schachner carded a pair of birdies, six pars and a bogey to make the turn at one-under. The Libertyville, Ill., native added birdies on No. 1, No. 3 and No. 6 to get to four-under before suffering a bogey on No. 7. He finished par-par to record his third straight round of under-par golf at the par-70, 6,701-yard Mark Bostick Course at the University of Florida. Schachner now has three top 10 finishes this season, including the first medalist honors of his career.
Freshman Matthew Pierce shot an even-par 70 in the third round, finishing the day with three birdies, 12 pars and three bogeys. Pierce ended the event tied for 23rd, the second top 25 finish of his career.
Clark Klaasen, who missed Saturday's action with a neck injury, shot a two-over 72 in the third round. The Grand Rapids, Mich., native opened with nine straight pars before carding a birdie on No. 1. He added another birdie on No. 5 to move to two-under before running into trouble on the 207-yard, par 3 sixth hole. Klaasen finished with a seven on the hole to slip to two-over, but recovered to finish par-par-par.
Sophomore Adam Long finished tied for 44th after shooting a four-over 74 on Sunday, while Wes Roach placed 64th after shooting a 78 in the final round.
Duke returns to action at the Puerto Rico Classic (Feb. 29-March 2).
NOTES
*** Schachner and Sucher were the only players in the field to shoot under-par in all three rounds.
*** Schachner has played six straight rounds of golf at even-par or better. He has been under-par in five of the six rounds.
*** Schachner finished tied for second in par 4 scoring at four-under. He was tied for fifth in par 3 scoring at one-under.
*** Schachner was tied for sixth in the tournament with 12 birdies and tied for 10th with 37 pars.
*** Schachner leads the Blue Devils with eight rounds of under-par golf this season
*** Pierce played the back nine of the Mark Bostick Course at two-under par. He had four birdies and two bogeys over the three rounds.
*** Pierce played the par 4s at one-under. He also ranked among the tournament leaders with 35 pars.
*** Long was one of nine players to record an eagle in the tournament. He eagled the 525-yard 12th hole in the second round.
*** Roach was tied for seventh overall with a team-best 38 pars at the tournament.
