DURHAM, N.C. - The Blue Devil senior trio of Matt Danowski, Zack Greer and Nick O'Hara has been selected as nominees for the 2008 Tewaaraton Trophy, as the watch list was cut to 22 nominees on Thursday. The 22 players on the list were nominated by coaches across all three divisions of men's lacrosse.
Danowski, the 2007 Tewaaraton Trophy winner, leads the nation in total points (67) and assists (39). With a one-goal, three-assist effort in Duke's 19-9 triumph over Virginia on Saturday, the Farmingdale, N.Y., native passed Tim Nelson (320 points for N.C. State & Syracuse from 1982-85) to move into second place on the NCAA's all-time scoring chart. With 323 career points, Danowski sits in second place behind Joe Vasta (343 points for Air Force from 1983-86).
Greer ranks second nationally in scoring with 63 total points and also ranks second in goals with 42, just behind teammate Max Quinzani's nation-leading 43 tallies. With 183 career goals, the Whitby, Ontario, Canada, native ranks first on Duke's all-time list, second in ACC history and sixth on the NCAA's career chart.
O'Hara, a first team All-America selection in 2007, has paced the Blue Devils in ground balls for three consecutive years. The Orchard Park, N.Y., native owns 65 grounders this season, a mark which ranks tops on the club.
Danowski, Greer and O'Hara join Adam Fullerton (Army), Ben Rubeor (Virginia), Brendan Cannon (Georgetown), Curtis Dickson (Delaware), Danny Glading (Virginia), Jeremy Blevins (UMBC), Jerry Lambe (Georgetown), Joey Kempe (Notre Dame), John Glynn (Cornell), Jordan Burke (Brown), Jordan DiNola (Navy), Kylor Berkman (Salisbury), Max Seibald (Cornell), Mike Leveille (Syracuse), Mike McDonald (Le Moyne), Paul Rabil (Johns Hopkins), Stephen Peyser (Johns Hopkins), Steven Brooks (Syracuse) and Terry Kimener (UMBC) on the list of nominees.
Second-ranked Duke travels to Manhasset, N.Y., on Saturday for a contest versus eighth-ranked Army. The game is part of the Lacrosse Day of Champions, an event held to pay homage to Jimmy Regan, an Army Ranger who was killed in Iraq last year. Regan was a high school All-America at Chaminade High School and went on to play at Duke from 1999-2002. Face-off is set for 12 noon and the game will be televised on ESPNU.
