BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.?Duke University junior John Barone captured three victories today at the Gardner-Webb Duals to become just the third wrestler in Blue Devil history to register at least 100 career wins. Duke went unbeaten on the day with triumphs over Eastern Michigan, Gardner-Webb, and Appalachian State.
Duke snuck past Eastern Michigan in the day's opening match, 22-20. The Blue Devils returned in the next match with a convincing 31-15 victory over the host Bulldogs. Duke closed out the day by beating Appalachian State, 22-18.
“We wrestled some amazing matches today,” head coach Clar Anderson said. “The Eastern Michigan match was an excellent match and all the guys did incredibly well. Dan Tulley injured his shoulder in the match, but he finished the match for us, which is huge. It was just an excellent match and it came down to the very end.”
Five different wrestlers went unbeaten as Duke improved to 9-3 overall this season and 8-1 in non-conference competition. Barone, Peter Terrezza, and Addison Nuding all went 3-0, while Aaron Glover and A.J. Guardado both posted 2-0 marks. Nuding's victories against EMU and Appalachian State were the decisive wins necessary for Blue Devil triumphs.
Barone's three victories pushes his career total to 102 wins, which ranks second all-time in Duke history. He needs four more to take over the top spot on the career charts and break his single-season record of 35 victories established last year.
In the opening match, the Blue Devils edged Eastern Michigan in thrilling fashion, 22-20. Duke grabbed a 2-1 decision by senior Addison Nuding over Nicholas Hendrick at 165 pounds to capture the three points for the win.
The match started at 174 pounds with Voris Tejada getting a 9-4 decision over Donald Funk. Duke captured four of the next five matches to race out to a 19-3 lead with four matches remaining. Included in that stretch were a 16-5 major decision win at 184 pounds by Barone and a fall by Jack Anderson at 133 pounds that produced 11 points.
Peter Terrezza added three points with an outstanding comeback in the third period to earn a 7-5 decision over Jordan McGuire.
Trailing 19-3, EMU responded with a pair of pins at 141 and 149 pounds to pull within four at 19-15. The Eagles went ahead 20-19 in the next match when Joshua Moulton registered a technical fall for five points at 157 pounds.
Nuding came back after a break in the action and wrestled an excellent close match. Both Nuding and Nicholas Hendrick registered a point during the seven minutes, but Duke came away with the winning point for riding time. The three-point decision gave Duke the 22-20 victory.
The second match of the day proved to be less exciting as Duke cruised to the 31-15 victory over Gardner-Webb. With Tulley out with an injury, Glover stepped in to the 174 spot, while Tejada and Barone bumped up a weight class and pulled out victories. Barone registered his fifth fall of the season in 1:38 to earn his 100th career victory. Competing for the first time since Dec. 6, Guardado came in at 149 pounds and pinned Austin Reece to earn six points.
Anderson highlighted the match with a fall in just 20 seconds. That ranks as the seventh-fastest fall in Duke wrestling history.
Looking for the weekend sweep, the Blue Devils took on Appalachian State in the final match of the day. Starting at 174-pounds for the second time that day, the final match came down to Nuding once again when the Mountaineers rallied to tie the score 18-18 heading into the final dual.
Glover got things started with an 18-6 major decision victory over Antionne Jones. Wrestling at 184 pounds again, Tejada battled hard against a bigger opponent and kept it to a 9-2 decision to keep the Blue Devils up by one. Barone and Robert Holbrook both added victories to push the lead to 11-3.
Terrezza continued his outstanding day at 125 pounds with a 14-4 major decision victory over Austin Annas. He improved his record today to 20-17 overall and 6-6 in dual decisions.
The Mountaineers captures 12 quick points at 133 and 141 pounds to make it 15-15 with three duals remaining. Guardado stepped in again and registered three more points with a 12-5 decision against Savva Kostis. Competing up a weight class, Mike Bell battled hard and had an excellent seven minutes in keeping it to just a three-point setback with a 6-2 decision for Appalachian State's William Powell.
It was all Nuding in the final match as he controlled the dual on his way to the 11-0 major decision victory over Kyle Blevins. Nuding is now 8-2 in dual matches this season and 12-6 overall.
“Addison [Nuding] had an excellent match,” Anderson said. “It was probably one of his best matches he has wrestled all season. He and all of the guys came up big for us today.”
“I'm really pleased with the performance today,” Anderson said. “To have so many guys have to bump up a weight class and perform as well as they did is incredible. These were three great wins for us today.”
