Cancun, Mexico - After scoring 20 points and hitting five three-pointers the night before, what could Duke junior guard Jasmine Thomas do to top it the next night? A triple-double. Thomas registered Duke's third triple-double in school history with 11 points, a career-high 12 assists and a career-high 11 rebounds as the 10th-ranked Blue Devils downed Marquette, 74-43, on Friday evening to conclude the Caribbean Challenge at the Moon Palace Resort in Cancun, Mexico.
Thomas joins Monique Currie and Katie Meier as the three players in school history to post double-figures in points, rebounds and assists in a single contest. Currie accomplished the feat against Florida State with 21 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists on Jan. 5, 2006, while Meier had 16 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists against Manhattan on March 11, 1987.
"I was just playing off a lot of energy," said Thomas. "We were really fired up for this game. I was just going after the ball. I usually don't have that many rebounds so that is something that they will expect to see out of me more."
In two games during the Caribbean Challenge, Thomas averaged 15.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 7.5 assists and 1.5 steals this week. The 12 assists against Marquette also matched the Duke single-game record held by three different Blue Devils - Currie, Meier and Leigh Morgan.
"It is remarkable when I look at the stat sheet and I see a triple-double by Jasmine," said Duke Head Coach Joanne P. McCallie. "It takes that kind of heart and hustle she played with [tonight]. I am happy for her."
Both teams battled hard the first 10 minutes of the game as neither squad could build more than a three point advantage before Duke went on a 10-0 run to take a 19-9 advantage at the 7:04 mark. The Blue Devils built a 13-point lead on two different occasions in the first half, including the halftime score of 29-16.
Over the final 38 seconds of the first half, Thomas connected on her first three-pointer of the night and then senior Bridgette Mitchell added two free throws with three seconds remaining as Duke went on a 5-0 run to close the half out, after Marquette had cut the Blue Devil lead to eight, 24-16.
In the second half, Duke led by as many as 23 before Marquette cut the Blue Devil advantage to 16, 54-38, with 6:45 remaining. Duke responded with a 16-0 run over the next 5:50 on its way to winning by a 31-point margin.
"Everybody was hustling and really playing very, very hard," said McCallie. "We have really had a great defensive tournament. Everyone played their part defensively-it wasn't any one person."
Duke registered five players score double-figures led by Mitchell's 13 points. Freshman Allison Vernerey added a career-high 12 points; Krystal Thomas chipped in 12 points and Joy Cheek scored 11. Marquette was led by Lauren Thomas-Johnson with 13 points as the Golden Eagles were held to 25.0 percent shooting, but outrebounded the Blue Devils, 46-43.
"Obviously this isn't the score we wanted for this game, but I thought in the first half our defense was offense and in the second half our pressure was great," said Marquette Head Coach Terri Mitchell. "At the end of the day, we did not hit shots. What I am most encouraged by is that is very fixable. What I love about this team is that they fought till the very end, never gave up and pressured the ball extremely well. Now we have to finish shots. We are sitting at 4-2 and have a very important game coming up next week. This team has a lot of heart and we are going to get better."
As a team, Duke shot 52.5 percent from the field, which is the second-highest field goal percentage of the season.
"I love to see the relentless intensity that we have been showing," commented McCallie. "We have really taken that less (loss at Texas A&M) and done a lot with it in terms of focusing on the things that are important in the game and what we can control."
Duke will return home to face third-ranked Ohio State on Thursday, Dec. 3 at 7:00 p.m., which will be a part of the ACC/Big 10 Challenge in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
